A local store has a 10 ton press that you would mount on a workbench. About a 16" opening side to side. Would this be sufficient for things like control arm bushings etc?

Yes, it would be enough for bushings but I'd go bigger. I just destroyed my cheap 10 ton press trying to make my trans cooler mounting bracket. I'd go with at least a 20 ton.

I would also go with a floor model. This way if you have an item that is longer than what you would normally need to press, the bench model may restrict the use.
