« on: October 23, 2014 - 02:05:13 PM »
all,

I am trying to get all major suspension components back together, I am
just curious what is available or what people have used to recreate the "cosmoline dip"
on lower control arms?

thanks

that sounds good,
also how do you remove the socket part (goes to torsion rod)
from the arm/threaded shaft that mounts through K member

Thanks

Reposting my question here that dissapeared the other day;
What is cosmoline, why did the use it only on the LCA's and why didn't the dip the whole arm?

Per google...
Quote
Cosmoline is the genericized trademark for a generic class of rust preventives, typically conforming to United States Military Standard MIL-C-11796C Class 3, that are a brown colored wax-like mass; have a slight fluorescence; and have a petroleum-like odor and taste

It doesn't dry completely...it stays tacky.  The LCA's are made up of a lot of separate pieces that are riveted together.  I assume the factory didn't want rust forming between all those separate pieces during the warranty period.(especially the torsion bar adjusting blade)  The LCA's weren't completely dipped because they didn't want to coat the lower ball joint socket.  The thick waxy cosmoline would have prevented the LBJ from being installed all the way into the socket.

When I redid my LCA's, using Krylon Battery Protectant seemed to be a popular choice.  I think it looks decent.

Resto Rick also has a paint "that when applied correctly" will mimic cosmoline.
