Ball Flange Vs Flat

I'm curious why we all still used flat flanges on our exhaust?  New cars use a "ball flange" that seems to work much better.  I had an 06 charger a few years back and used ball flanges at the headers and other connection points and never had leaks. 

Thoughts?

My headman headers have a ball flange. Works great!  :2thumbs:

Something similar to this.... It's a GM exhaust doughnut which were prone to burning out but newer designs have been made of steel and/or graphite & they hold up very well...  The metal inner liner is a tight slip fit into the manifold

Not very good. They hit the steering box, starter, and steering coupler. Others have had no issues.  :dunno: I've heard people having to also dimple TTI headers but not as much as the other brands.

There are ball flange kits out there to replace the standard flat couplers seen on most headers. However, you have to cut off the flange and weld on the new ball socket.

I've thought about it, but never pulled the trigger on it. I've got plenty of other thigns to spend money on to get my car back on the road. In all honesty, Since I began cheking sealing surfaces for flatness and correcting them where necessary, I've not had nearly as much trouble with blown out gaskets, including collectors. Its surprising how some of these surfaces are not as flat as they should be. I'd also think if you properly support the remainder ofthe exhaust system, it will minimizethe flex at the colelctor joint.

I'm just so tired of hearing leaks. My 06 Charger never leaked and I had headers on it. It had the ball flange and you could just give them a few turns every now and then to make sure the bolts were tight.  Flat surfaces on parts that are supposed to flex dont work well.  I may look into converting.

Search Summit Racing for ball flange. They have kits from $25 to 90 in various sizes.

I have the same Headman headers as Brad, no leaks in the two or three years they have been on.  Mine fit perfectly without a single dimple or dent. Don't know if the different install experience from Brad is from differences in the car, or the headers.  :dunno:

These dang headers have given me grief with the steering column install - soon to be fixed!!!
