New member, first muscle car
« on: November 03, 2014 - 10:59:47 PM »
Hello, as the subject states I'm new to this forum. I grew up with Mopars in the family and I have enjoyed owning a few myself. Up until recently I have only owned newer Mopars such as my old 05 Dodge SRT4. That car was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed it while I had it. However, I have always wanted to learn more about and get into older Mopars, much like my father had. So with the help of a friend last year I bought a 1971 Dodge Challenger. It once had a 383 2bl in it, but that was long gone and only the shell remained. My idea and build for this car is a complete rebuild from the ground up. It currently sits stripped, sanded, and now more recently sealed and waiting for the next step (Body work and paint). This project will take me a quite a long time, but I am enjoying the process and learning a lot! My idea with this car will be a fun street car, that I take to the track and race occasionally. So far I have a 440 block for it, and now I am just contemplating things like Stroker or non stroker (I was thinking 440 source 512 stroker kit), and what color to paint it. I have purchased a body stiffening kit (mainly wanted the frame connectors), and more recently a dana 60 4:10 out of a 69 superbee A12 (from researching it looks like I can put wider tires on the back with a b body rear end). The original color was GY9 Dark aka tawny Gold, but I am opting for a new challenger color and so far I am leaning towards Graphite Gray (But I'm still considering options like Dodges High octane red, and others). If you have any advice please share, I'm here to learn and hopefully contribute as well.

Thanks,

Kris

Here is a picture of when I first bought it, I would post more pics, but the "file size" is too big, sorry.

Hey, welcome from Canada  :canada:
Rad car you got there and looks like fun project!
I personally like the GY9  . Not something you see all the time and not too flashy!

Great looking '71 Challenger, my favorite year for Challengers.  I had one myself and loved it!  The 440 with a Dana is a great combo, not sure about the 4.10's though.  I had 3.91's but only a stroked 408 and they are too much for the street to my liking, so I went up to 3.55's and it drove great.

Pimtao,
I've seen the GY9 in pics, and it looks decent, gives the car a real classic look. I'm just not sure it's what I am looking for. I have quite a bit of time to think about it though. I also want to have the R/T stripes and scoops put on as well, I like how the black breaks up the solid color. Either way I am honestly extremely happy to have my dream muscle car. The challenger has been my favorite for a long time and now I own one :)

dfrazz,
Thanks, 70, 71 are my favorite years, and I am very happy to have found this project. Only hard part is the patience to wait for it to get done, but as long as I am moving forward even at a slow pace, I'll get it done eventually. I will be putting in an auto with a shift kit (Stage 1, or maybe 2, not wanting really aggressive), and perhaps a stall. I will try out the 4.10s and if they are too much and too crazy I will swap them out for 3.54s, but I am only going to be driving it on the street, I don't plan on driving it on the highway. Also while fuel mileage would be great, I have another car for that so I am going for fun and shoot for somewhere around 550-600hp range N/A.

You're starting from a great place.  Take it all the way down and build it back up the way you want it.

Thanks guys, I decided to tear it all the way down now, and have it put on a rotisserie and get rid of any and all rust rather than regret it later if rust started showing up. My next update will be in spring/summer of next year. Looking forward to the assembly!

Hey buddy welcome to the site!  Where you from?  And nice looking project you got there.  What kind of wheels are on it, they look big, 18s?  I like the black w/polished lip look that you got there

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome! Mopars run in my family, my uncles have had many in the past including chargers, cudas and challengers. One of my uncles still owns his 68 charger too!

Thanks, and I am located in the Northwest (Spokane, WA), and purchased the car over by the Seattle area. Yes those are 18s in the pic, I traded them off to my buddy for some other stuff I wanted. I'd like to go for an older look on this car, so with the help of the b body rear end I am hoping to put either some 15x10 magnum 500s or rallyes on it with 295/50 tires. My buddies dad owns a few chargers and he has the 10" wide magnum 500s with 295/50s and they look great underneath that car! I read that I would need a b body rear end in order to put some meats like that under the car, so that is what I will do!

Welcome to the site and good luck with your restoration!   With those 4:10's it'll pass anything; but a gas station.

Thanks Jimynick and Chlngrcrzy, I plan on building this challenger the way I would want it built if I had ordered it straight from the factory (With reason of cost of course, lol). Wilwood brakes, US Car tool stiffening kit, and other modern stuff will go into this car. I am attempting to do everything that is important before paint, so if there are any suggestions please let me know, because once it's painted I am not going back, lol.
