IMO Most 110V machines like Miller or Lincoln can do those welds, don't know about harbor freight or others, but probably most. I do prefer 220V. Any welding is dependent on skills. Mig welding can have plenty of penatration and is the easiest and more forgiving than the others. The skill level to do stick or tig is a lot higher. The right size wire affects penatration, a flux core can give better penatration, but the weld will be not as clean looking as solid wire that is gas shielded. These rear end housings are not that thick, I'm guessing where he's welding its 3/16" thick max if that. Steel structures being built nowadays are being welded with wire feed machines. On your brackets if you can, weld all around leaving no open joint because that's were a "tear" or failure can happen.  :2cents:

:wavingflag: Since I had to pull the rear back out to add extra bracing I decided to pull the third member and put my green bearings on the axles, and paint everything.  Then to my dismay I knew I had a 741 case but it turns out it is a  crappy limited slip with 3.23 gears.  The budget was blown up the motor and heads so it will have to do for now.   :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Nice! I'm working on that right now also. But I'm just gonna put new leaf springs and shocks from Firmfeel in. Wilwood discs also. Is there any good tutorial on green bearings, best way to remove the old ones and mont the greens?

:wavingflag: you either have to cut them off or use a press press. As far as putting the new ones on a press or heating them in an ovento 350. But you better have good gloves. Lol

When I did mine I didn't find any complete tutorial, not saying it's not out there just I was only able to find bits and pieces all over. The first time I replaced tapered with tapered, used a cut off wheel, be careful to not go to far down in or you'll cut into the axle shaft. I tried to stop before going through then used a chisel to pop and crack the inner race loose. I did nick one of my axles not to deep strength wise I think it was ok. Be careful around the areas where the inner seal rides. I used radiator hose clamps on the axle where the outer and inner axle sealing areas are so if the cutoff wheel slipped it hit the hose clamp and not the axles. I'll see if I still have pictures. Later after some other problems I now have green bearings that came installed with new axles, one of the axle end splines had stripped. Good luck.

:wavingflag: The parts fairy arrived again this afternoon, all I can say is I love wilwood products. They always fit well and perform amazingly.  The official next step is on to the rotisserie to work the underside body but that won't be happening anytime soon.  :working:

Nice! I got my Wilwood brakes over a year ago now, once in a while I take them out of the boxes and imagine them on my car  :grinno: .
You seem to be almost in the same stage I'm in, I just ordered a rotisserie, wasn't gonna touch the underside, but I just can't put all my nice new stuff on undercoated dirt.

Good luck breaking the 741 , I would hardly call it crappy , it is still stronger then a GM 12 bolt by far

:wavingflag: I agree with the sentiment aout the gm-12.  We usually upgraded any gm to a currie unit.  As I have stated before I am not a mopar guy and I have been told by several people with the 600hp range I am shooting for I should be changing to a 489 case.  If you guys think different let me know. I have no problem keeping a couple of extra bucks in my pocket.

The 741 case 1 1/2" pinion is ideal for a mild 340 but a 742 1 5/8" or 489 1 3/4 is  standard big block.

Just use what you have and don't do any burn outs or heavy launches. In the meantime save up for a Dana and call Cass!  :2cents:
