67 CUDA DISCHARGING
« on: April 30, 2005 - 12:11:44 AM »
:'(
I am having some nasty electrical problems with my 67 cuda. Any help would be much appreciated.  The car had previously been converted to an electronic ignition. I installed the march serpentine pulleys and converted the car over to the double field chrome alternator and flat pack voltage regulator all at the same time.  I  purchased and installed the newer style voltage regulator pigtail and wired it up according to the diagram supplied to me earlier. When the install was finished i noticed the car is discharging. I made sure the voltage regulator was grounded properly and still the same problem. i figured i bought a bad regulator so i purchased another and still the same problem. I had the alternator checked out and there are no problems with it. I tried  running new wires to the voltage regulator just in case that  was the  problem but it still discharges.
I have not owned the car very long and was not sure if it was discharging before i made the changes so I put back on the original 1 field alternator and purchased a new old style voltage regulator and it is still discharging. The car quits running when the battery cable is disconnected. I have checked for naked wires both under the hood and dash and see no problems. The car does not appear to be discharging when the ignition is off .
I am completely puzzled at this point.  If anyone has any information to help I would greatly appreciate it.

you should have 12v hooked to the reg & 1 termianl of the alt the green wires is the second wire connected to the alt & it goes back to the voltage reg , the 12v power eire should be dark blue start by checking that much out

also you converted to a serpentine belt you say? is it routed right or are you running the alt backwards ? seen it happen before

Hi Guys,
Thanks for taking time to try to help me.  I checked and the green field wire from the alternator is going to the field on the voltage regulator. the blue wire is going to the other post on the voltage regulator. i checked and there is 12 volts at the blue post on the voltage regulator.
I have the march pulleys off of the car now as I switched back to the original pulleys to try to find the problem.  The car has no power steering or brakes so the belt was definitely on correct. Good thought though.

good ground to the flat back voltage reg???  ground strap from the firewall to the engine block??

the engine is grounded to the firewall.  I sanded some of paint off under the regulator to make sure it is grounded.  I also switched back over to the old style regulator and still have this problem.  thanks for the info though.

 :iagree:

with the ing. switch off- check with a meter to see if there is about 12 volts at the alt's larger wire!!!

if there is- then there is a connection to the alt from the battery.

another check is to start the car- watch the battery voltage with a meter- off= about 12-13 volts, running should be above 13-14 volts.

now if is is 12-13- it's not charging- take the green wire off the alt and with a piece of wire- short that terminal and to the alt's case- that should put the alt into full charging- watch the meter for a up swing of voltage.

let us know what happens for the next step!!

ok I checked the voltage at the alternator large wire and it is 12.2 volts with the ignition off.  I started the car and the reading at the same place was 11.5 volts.  I disconnected the green wire and made a short jumper from the alternator field plug to the case of the alternator. I measured again at the alternator large wire and the voltage remained at 11.5 volts. I am not sure how to check the ammeter? I appreciate the help.  Attached are a couple of pictures of the car.  This is my first A body.  Just sold my 72 cuda about six months ago.

Chyrco maybe right- only one more check before you replace it.

at the blue on the alt- with the ing. on or running- check the wire for that 12-11.5 volts at that terminal- if there is then the alt is not working.

if there is no voltage there- then check that wire from the alt to the flat pack.
