"JUST DASHES" E body door panels ??
« on: November 06, 2014 - 08:44:05 AM »
I am looking for all new plastic for the interior of my 1970 EF8 Challenger. I would love to go with the Metro molded interior as the grain appears correct and the colors are the actual plastic and not sprayed on. Problem it is not available in green and according to Metro never will. A possible option would be to buy a white set from Metro and dye them green.
I read on the  "Just Dashes" website that they will refurbish your existing E body interior plastic. Apparently they do this by "vacuum forming" a new vinyl skin on your old plastic.
I know "Just Dashes" do a great job on the E body dash but I would like input from anyone that may have seen their door panels etc.  Thanks

I'd rather have dyed panels then vinyl covered ones :2cents:

Ok that's what I will do. I am going to dye them EF8. Do you think black ones can be successfully dyed EF8 or do I need white ones. Reason I bring this up is I have a nice set of black originals but not sure if the green dye will cover well enough. One more question is would you guys buy the dye from Mopar parts vendors or would you have SEM mixed for you at an auto body paint store?  Thanks!

Buy the correct color from Herb's Parts.  They have their own line of interior paints.  Try the paint on the back side of your black panels and see how well it covers.  I just sprayed some bucket seat hinge covers with Herb's Pearl White paint.  The pearl turned the black covers silver.  I ended up having to spray them white first...then spray the pearl over the white.

I think black would be your best base color. If you get a small scratch, the black won't show through as much as white would.

I just called Herb's and she tells me that the green will cover the black without any problems? Unfortunately they only sell their interior paint in spray bombs. I think to do all the plastic in the interior especially the door panels it would do a better job if you could buy the paint by the quart and use a spray gun. I am afraid that it might look blotchy with a spray can. I am trying to do a high end restoration on this car and I am very fussy. Any opinions?

The spray bombs work incredibly well. I would start with black too

Yes, they work very well.  They key to painting the plastic is to use an adhesion promoter and spray multiple light coats.  You shouldn't have any trouble with "blotchy" or "striped" pieces.  I resprayed all my interior panels with SEM Landau black.  They turned out great.  You don't want heavy paint buildup...it won't look natural.

Update: I spoke to Dave at Performance Car graphics. They also sell interior paint/dye but only by the pint or quart. He tells me that I cannot paint over black as I will never get the proper shade of green without seriously diminishing the grain in the plastic. Says I would have to give one coat of beige and then proceed with the green?  Dave seems very knowledgeable and says that they also sell the green paint for the metal parts on the dash and steering wheel. He says that from the factory these metal painted parts were painted with a textured paint in a different shade of green than the door panels. He tells me if everything was the same shade of green that it would look terrible. He will mail me info documenting all the different shades of green that were used in the 1970 Challenger interior.
Funny thing when I called Herb's they told me to use the same product for the door panels and metal on the dash and wheel.

Each different type of plastic would have been a different color.  The door panels would have been a different shade of green then the harder dash side trim plastics.  They would have been a different shade then the vinyl on the dash pad.  Yes, the dashes were painted with a textured "suede" paint.

Here are some pictures of Dave Walden's OE gold Challenger.  You can see that the "harder" plastic used on the console and dash side trim is a lot darker then the door panels.  Green would be similar.  It looks like the blue of the dash pad is pretty close to the door panels and suede dash frame though.

Thanks for the pics, very helpful! I looked at the OEM black panels that I bought years ago and they are not as good as I remembered. I think I will order new white panels from Roseville and dye them. The car that I am building will be a trailer queen so wear and tear will not be an issue.

You can get different variances in colour by adding a top coat. SEM makes a satin clear that alters the shade and you'll find that using the same paint of different surfaces ie: soft plastic, metal or hard plastic will yield different shades as well. I suede finish on the metal dash can be achieved using different techniques with the same spray bomb. :2cents:
