Let's have an exhausting discussion
« on: November 06, 2014 - 12:19:14 PM »

Well it's been awhile since I've played around with exhaust systems. I am fairly happy with Flowmasters on my other cars but I know alot has gone on since then and wondered what folks are using nowadays. Results come from entire systems and not just mufflers so more info the better.

It seems there is a large contingent of folks have gone Dynomax and I was hoping folks would chime in on the differences of each of these mufflers. Other great pieces of info would be headers, overall diameter from collector to tailpipe, H-pipe vs X-pipe vs none, resonators (yes or no), mounting issues, etc.

Thanks I'm exhausted!

So far I've had nothing but compliments on the Magnaflow straight thru mufflers mounted on the very rear underside. You're welcome to come over and hear it in person if you'd like.

The place I recommend having them or whatever one's you decide on being installed is in Campbell, CA.

Read a lot have run the Magnaflow system with good reviews. Headers it seems like fit, finish, performance all lead to TTi but the price is high.

Here's some info I've bookmarked on X vs H pipes, it sounds good and makes sense but someone correct me if this is wrong:

X-pipe: Mid-pipes built with a crossover, or "X" shaped design, purposely cross exhaust streams to even out flow and streamline exhaust gasses through the rest of the system. X-pipes are generally raspier and louder than H or Y-pipes and have been shown to provide slightly more power than their counterparts. You are likely to see most of the power gains higher in the rpm band with an X-pipe.

H-Pipe: An H-pipe is better at balancing sound and produces a more consistent, classic muscle car growl. It does less than an X-pipe in the way of balancing exhaust gasses but still flows quite well. H-pipes maintain the back-pressure necessary for torque gains earlier in the rpm band, as opposed to the top-end power seen from an X-pipe

The concept I'd like to build for my car is similar to on Aaron Beck's Kuda. He built a system with cutouts straight off the headers. The rest of the exhaust system was an X pipe into mufflers then resonators. Seems like the best of both worlds in terms of noise; quiet and loud when you want it but definitely a custom job.

I like the higher pitched sound of the X.  I'm constantly listening to sound clips on Youtube comparing different brands of mufflers.  The problem is that most videos are recorded with crappy equipment and are listened to on crappy computer speakers.  You are never going to get an accurate representation of the sound.  From the clips I've heard, the Flowmasters sound the best.  The Dynomaxes sound like crap.  However, a lot of people say they sound great.  I listened to a SB Dart at the Mopar Nats that had Dynomaxes on it and it sounded good.  Unfortunately, I think the ONLY way to figure out what to use is to purchase multiple sets and compare them yourself.  Engine specs can really change the exhaust note.

I've got a BB Dakota that has 2 1/2" Flowmaster 40 series that dump infront of the rear axle.  It sounds mean but is extremely loud on the highway.  I used to have a single Flowmaster 50 series on my 00 Durango until it rusted out.  It sounded great!  It was noticeably louder at idle and acceleration, however it was quiet at cruising speeds and didn't drone.  When that muffler rusted out, I didn't want to spend the money on another Flowmaster so I just put on a Walker tough turbo muffler.  It has the exact same sound as the Flowmaster and was a fraction of the cost.

I put a Magnaflow "race series" muffler on my 02 Stratus R/T.  The race series is the straight through muffler.  It did drone under load while going up a hill in 5th gear but it wasn't bad.  That 3.0V6 sounded good with that muffler.

When I'm ready to buy a system for my Dart, I'm probably going to buy TTI.  You can get them with Dynomax mufflers or without mufflers.  I'm thinking about trying the Dynomaxes and then trying a set of Flowmaster 40 series.  I've already got the FLowmasters so it won't cost me anything.  If those aren't to my liking, I might end up with 50 series Flowmasters on it......SO MANY CHOICES.

Magnaflow x-pipe here. 440 lump. Bought the complete stainless kit from performancepeddler.com. $360. I am happy with the sound and the install wasn't bad at all. A little tricky lining up the pipes with the collectors but if I could do it, so could you.

Magnaflow kit with traight through oval muflers under the back seat, onto TTI headers, per dodj, a little work on getting them to a header flange, i have tucked the X pipe right up as high as can go (tailshaft ballance weight clears the X pipe by 1/8", doesnt ever touch it, I also fitted Magnaflow 6x6 race mufflers either side of the gas tank, some pipe tinkering to get it sitting perfectly out of the valance but Im really happy, zero drone at all, not overly load but has a nice note to it

Thru the years Flowmaster has normally been my choice because I like a lot of sound.  I now have Dynomax.  I don't see any performance difference just a slightly different sound. Normally I would run a 2.5" system on my cars but this one I have 2" Hooker Super Comp headers to a full 3" system.  I am hoping to put on an electric cutout system this spring.

I had the TTI H-pipe 3" exhaust with TTI ceramic headers on a stroked 408 in my '71 Chally.  Great sound and performance!  The only thing I wish I would have done different is bought the Gear Vendors Overdrive H-pipe config because that was in the plans.

Running a 3" flowmaster system with 40 series mufflers, summit el cheapo ceramic headers.

I LOVE IT, but I wouldn't go three inches again. It was too good of a price to walk away from but if I could go back in time for sure I'd go with 2.5.

I really like the sound of DynoMax Super Turbos , the flowmasters are loud & drone , I typically use X pipes for increased flow over H pipe unless customers want the H pipe look I also typicallu use 2.5" pipe unless it is a massive stroker or high RPM race build , the 2.5" is a bit quieter

I have 3 inch Ultraflows on my Challenger with the 528. It sounds awesome IMO although I'm not as popular with the neighbors as I once was.

Neil

I am guessing that "high RPM race build" means > 7k rpms eh?
