Well this explains much.

I'm just going with a modern rear defrost .... that entire speaker/defrost setup had me scratching my head since I started my tear down. I'll look at what the 3 sisters have to offer, but don't get your hopes up. All three had been dumped and scavenged in a field for 30 years.

This was a picture (green) of one on Alan's Barrelcuda.

So what one is right?
Speaker in front or back?

Back around 78 or 79, I bought a 70 Challenger with the rear defroster option and it was definitely setup with the speaker at the rear like the green one shown above.  I always thought it was very odd that the speaker wasn't directly under the speaker grill.  I sold that car back in the early 90's and unfortunately I don't have a picture of the trunk.  Could it have been changed before I bought the car; yes, but it's unlikely.

For what its worth my AAR has this option and the speaker was mounted towards the front under the cut out in the package tray.
That being said I am finding enough :poopoke: during my teardown that anything is possible. They could have remounted mine upside down and it wouldn't have surprised me. :dunno:

Finesse asked the 'Cuda out to dinner once, but the 'Cuda stood it up to go drink beer under an overpass with her hot little sister. As far as this car is concerned, finesse can go stuff itself."

If you had the rear defroster option, then did it include that you had the rear space saver tire as well?

I put my original 14" spare in and there would be no way that I can put the speaker on the front location.
The inlet duct would interfere with the tire.

So perhaps Alan's green car is right if it had a full spare?

Did the rear defrost option always come with the rear speaker option?

My green car had the extra cost option of a collapsible spare. I say extra cost because they were standard on all convertibles and on all cars optioned with 15" wheels, but my car was a 14" wheel car originally :2cents:

The rear defrost and rear speaker were separate options.

Thanks Alan! Didn't know that. I guess that means I gotta start looking for a collapsible spare now  :ebay:
15" where standard on all 340 cudas right?
At least I can save a few dollars on the rear speakers  :bricks1:

Awesome thanks Alan! I think I read in the cuda restoration guide that the 70 cuda always came with 15" but it's not the first time that the book is wrong. And I was always confused why they said the 340 came with 15" standard but not the 440!
But that solves it! Thanks again

Hey Mike,
I pulled my broadcast sheet to see if it would enlighten me or give us a clue as to your question.
It shows the  Rear Defroster, Rear Speakers, and Collapsible spare as individual options.(H31,R31,W34)
You would think that if the Rear defroster required the collapsible spare that it would be part of a "package" ie one option requiring the other? :dunno:.
What I can't figure out is that my speaker code R31(1) I believe translates to Rear Mono Speaker, yet I have the R22 Am 8 track stereo option as well. I also have the rear fader which is not listed on the sheet (maybe comes with the 8 track option?) I wonder if they include the other speaker with the defroster option. :clueless:
I know this doesn't answer your question, but throwing it out in the information pool.
Maybe someone who has a broadcast sheet with the defroster option that had 14" wheels can shed further light.

My car had all those options, but the broadcast sheet won't tell you if any of them were "mandatory" because of the other :banghead:

 :iagree:

Some options were "required" with other components.  They weren't always lumped together in a package.  Is there any info about this on Hamtramck-historical?

This Saturday, I'll try and remember to take a picture of the 14" tire and how close it is to the tube duct.
