Alternator question??

I am trying to hook up a brand new engine wiring harness in a '72 Challenger with 340. According to the manual, there are three wires that go to the alternator. I have identified the three wires, the battery wire has a ring terminal on the end of it to be mounted on the stud on the back of the alt. The other two have female spade terminals The problem is I think the alternator I have is missing one of the male spade terminals to connect the wire to. Am I correct?   :1zhelp:

Yes, that's the wrong alternator. That is what they call a single field alternator used PRE-1970 :2cents:

Also, when did the "square back" alternator start showing up?  My 73 has a square back.  Did 72 use one as well?

I went to this alternator because the one specified for a 72 Challenger would not fit. The 340 has aluminum heads on it and this alternator barely clears the head.  Can I add the terminal tab under the existing screw and make it work properly?  :dunno:

So with the new wiring harness, the wires that extend to the alternator has a black wire with a ring terminal that I am sure attaches to the Bat stud on the alternator. There is also a purple wire, a green wire and a tan wire. which two of these go to the alternator and does the third wire go to the A/C compressor? The alternator has terminals "FLD" and  "GRD", which colored wires go to these?  :dunno:

Look at the diagram "Topcat" posted.  You should have blue and green wires that connect to the alternator. Blue= field+...Green= field- but it will function the same if they are hooked up backwards.  The purple wire should have a rubber 90degree boot on it.  That's for the temp sender.  The brown wire goes to the electric washer motor if you have electric washers.  If you have a foot pump, the brown wire gets wrapped up around the three pronged clip attached to the alternator.

Make sure you have the right spacers for the alternator.

If you don't you can crack the back half of the alternator off by over tightening it.

Don't ask...

So from what has been said... Will it work if I connect the black wire to the Bat Terminal, the Blue wire to the Field terminal, A ground wire from the block to the Grd Terminal and leave the green wire disconnected?

Just trying to figure out how to hook this thing up!

I think its better to get the correct alternator with 2 fields.

Yes that alt will work with a second tab added behind the screw as long as the second terminal has no connection to ground & is isolated
