Vinyl Top Wide vs Narrow
« on: November 17, 2014 - 02:53:05 PM »
What is the difference between wide and narrow vinyl tops?

Getting ready to order one for 1972 Dodge Challenger.  Would it have been wide or narrow from the factory?

Thanks.

Would have been narrow.
Take a look at 70 & 71 Challengers. You can see the seem follow down the B pillars to the top of the quarter panel...That's considered a "wide seem" :2cents: They stop it in 72

72 still used the wide seam top where the seam runs down the B-pillar.  Starting in 73, the Challenger used the narrow seam top.

The 73 literature shows the wide seam top as well.  However, early production cars and/or 72 models were used for pictures and airbrushed with changes.

The dark silver Challenger in the 73 brochure(JA5...73 only color) still shows the wide seam top.  It also has the 72 style fender mounted turn signal lights, 70-72 rubber filler pieces on the corners and air brushed bumper guards.  I think a late production 72 was painted the new color for press photos.

Everyone with a 72 that has a vinyl top, post your SPD and if it has a wide or narrow top.  Since the 73 brochures still show the old top, that leads me to believe it was a model year change over.  I'd be interested to find out for sure.

The Cuda always had the narrow seam top where the seams started at the windshield and ended at the back glass.  I've always thought the wide seam top looked bad.  It looks like a mistake.  The narrow seam top is a lot cleaner looking. :2cents:

Narrow seam top...

I like the wide seam if you are putting louvers on the rear windshield.

I have always preferred the wide seam look on the Challenger. Sporty and classy at the same time.

Thanks.
