  I used aircraft stripper for my undercoating,just coat it on thick and let set for awhile,then take a stiff puddy knife and comes off fairly easy.what ever you use it sure can be a p.i.t.a when that's falling off the wheel wells and on to your skin. ouch...........

That sucks!  How far do you want to go with this right now?  I think you'll find more surprises since the rails look like that.  Can you afford to do a complete tear down?

The car was sold as frame up restoration. It has a new trunk pan and driver side floor pan. Most of the outside sheet metal is new. This is what the outside looks like.

If the bottom looks like that, my gut tells me they cut corners on the top side.  What do the door latches and door strikers look like?  Are they painted body color?

Ugg sorry to see this. Not cool. I got taken like that in the 80's with my first Challenger, roofing tar and cardboard does not a frame rail make.

Bad news to hear about your frame rails.

So possibly something you can do to see what the inside of the frames look like, is to use an engine telescoping visual tool.

Those are generally used by engine builders. Perhaps you know a shop or engine builder and ask if you can use it for a little while.
