Best pistol grip shifter replacement?
« on: November 26, 2014 - 10:56:23 PM »
This has prolly been on here, but I did a search and couldnt come up with anything,  I have a 73 challenger that was and auto and I switched to 4 speed a few years ago using mostly used parts including the shifter, it is a little sloppier than I would like , it's a factory style  with slip in handle, but now I want a new one , so what is the best way to go , I seen some e- body ones on ebay , but there is also a t/a AAR version,  what is that? Also I seen some have stops in them is there any other good options for a bolt in shifter , it don't see anything straight from hurst , just on ebay

Your shifter handle were 2 possible choices:

Splined or smooth.

Brewersperf can get you the right one.

Reproductions are made by gunslinger for hurst.  These reproductions are like jewelry and flat out perfect.  The 70's only had the spline with 71-74 receiving the smooth and two bolt retention.

Actually the 1970 "clip-in" style are smooth, while the 71-74 are splined requiring two bolts :2cents:

The one I have now is clip in , and I'll be using that handle, can I just drill the holes in the handle then? Also what is the T/A AAR one I seen ? I didn't know there was a difference?  Any tighter maybe?

I think I want one with stops the factory one I have now does not have stops maybe that's why it's more worn out?

I looked up gun slingler,  I only seen handles, my pistol grip handle is good,  the shifter mechanism is worn out

Yes you can drill your handle.

AAR, T/A' s used the same shifters as every other Cuda or Challenger...

Brewers, Passon, or even Hurst can rebuild the mechanism to eliminate the slop and smooth up  the action. Inquire with them to get costs and process for sending it in.

FWIW, I had Hurst rebuild a V-Gate shifter I had a few years back. Worked like new once I got it back.
