Modified Headers, and full custom stainless exhaust
« on: November 29, 2014 - 03:03:40 AM »
I will be starting another thread here about my headers and exhaust system. For starters I am using a set of Hooker super comps, a flowmaster 3" stainless u-fit kit and borla pro-XS muffs. I will be modifying the headers to fit the 1" drop and 1.5" setback of my 440 along with making them play nice with my fast ratio arms.
Have the parts already I will post pics shotly.

I will love to see what you do with the headers about the fast ratio arms.

Well to some extent the engine set back will ease the pain, the engine drop may cause some though.

True, steering linkage room may be fine, but I'm betting t-bar clearances may be the first obstacle.

I'm reviewing what it will take to lift my engine 1.5" and I can already see some tube to t-bar issues.

HP I'll agree with you on the T-bars, the other area is going to be around the power steering gear itself. While the passenger side seems like it will be the easier of the two.

Any updates to this thread.
I am curious to how the 3" U fit works out.
I will be adding a 3" dual to mine fairly soon.

Got to fit my steering linkage back in, sent my box to FF for a stage 3 2weeks ago, they have it and I will have it back in about 3 weeks. Most if the fittings have a slip fit end, which is nice because it allows you to tweak the angles slightly more or less than what they are yo help with alignment . Once it's back in the fab work will start up, so look for more updates, and a sound clip  :ylsuper: In about 3-4 weeks.

Edit: Box shipped hopefully I have it this Friday or Saturday.

Well good news steering box is in, bad news, a gusset on my QA1 LCAs hits the box..... :banghead:
So this week end I will remove the torsion bar, grind and reposition the gusset, and finally test fit my headers.

Here's a photo of my issue, which I will forward to QA1 with an email. I think it's a victim of poor gusset welding i.e. metal pulls when welded on one side in this ones case the side that was welded first caused it to pull away, and instead of pushing the gusset down it looks like they welded it with the gap present...

where it's hitting the box...

In this photo you can see where excess material is present.

Split the gusset folded it in and welded it using a root & cap method. Clears the box with about a 1/16 to spare. Got the front suspension all together again. I have fitted the passenger side header on with no real issues, drivers side #1 tube I another story thou. Will post picks Tuesday or Wednesday night.

Ok, after running into some issues, getting some odds and ends done in between, and finally sorting said issues I can start on the exhaust again. Example, I am rebuilding my T-56 cross-member to gain 1/8" inch extra clearance at the 1350 series yoke; however, to run my 3.5 inch aluminum driveshaft I will have to section nearly the entire length of the tunnel to fit, so at full rear compression I don't bury the shaft into the tunnel. The bright side is the lead time for the drive shaft is 5 weeks. So that issue takes a back burner to the exhaust, and the cross-member will be finished tomorrow afternoon, with and all out thrash to install the header and exhaust following that.

Well finished closing on my house, sold the old one, will be moving into a new place on 7th of August with more garage space :2thumbs:. I have done a good bit of work on my headers I have 16.5 inches of primary tube, going into a tri-y set up. Got a new program to help me design the headers called MAXPIPE v3.98. Very handy for determining lengths to catch the harmonic pulse by having the right pipe lengths. So now I can confidently build my pipes to my motor, have increased ground, engine bay clearance of tri-y's without power loses. Picks will go up tonight. I will be ordering some cones from flowmaster that taper from 2.5 to 3" to make my collectors with, as well.
