70 RT SE Challenger question
« on: November 30, 2014 - 01:43:12 PM »
Hello, great forum, new guy with a simple question. I'm no expert to say the least however, I'm looking at a purchase of a 70 Challenger, it's a real RT / SE but.... It has the large back window without vinyl top, is this possible? I thought SE only came with vinyl top small window, car shows no sign of ever having a vinyl top but would look much better with one installed IMHO, or could there have been a vin plate change, it looks as though it's never had the tags altered or removed, thanks for any help at all!

Does the VIN plate state RT/SE ? Does the body stampings on the cowl and rad support match the VIN ? That's where I would start.

Original 383 is gone with a 70 440 in its place which is fine with me, doesn't have to be completely original but would like it to have a vinyl top, just can't figure out if you could order that combination without black top, if not then the whole car could be a total clone.

JS29N0B is a RT/ SE 383.  RT/SE's came with a small window and a vinyl top.   Someone might have removed it at some point in the cars 40+ year life.  Now those SE parts are hard to find and expensive.

Yes vins match: JS29N0B
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

NO...You could not get a RT/SE without the small rear window and vinyl top. It was a part of the package and NOT an option  :2cents:

Check to see if the numbers on the rad support and cowl match the VIN on the dash and title.

Thanks so much, now the hard part, how do it get a large window without extensive body work? Also should it be put back to just an RT with painted top and vin tags indicating SE.

Car looks good the way it is but now me and anyone else who knows about these cars will think it's not a true RT/SE🚏🇮🇹😔

The small SE window is just a fibreglass plug that fits into the large rear window frame.

I believe the headliner on the SE is also completely different . If you decide to make the conversion I have a spare SE fiberglass plug and glass [no trim]. I live in Canada so shipping would be expensive.

Found this one on Ebay [not mine] http://www.ebay.com/itm/1970-challenger-SE-rear-window-/331398210376?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4d28df6348&vxp=mtr

Not sure about the mounting hardware, must have been changed but if it's possible to change back I'm not too far from Canada!

Not sure what was done to convert yours to a non SE roof, but I can tell you what you would need to install an SE window on a regular Challenger.
Outside:
-SE fiberglass rear window plug
-SE rear glass
-SE window trim
-wide seam vinyl top
-SE stainless trim for vinyl top
-SE roof badges

Interior:
-SE [rigid cardboard] headliner
-SE sail panels
-SE plastic surround for rear window
-Roof console.

Thank you all for the help, it has the original roof console, the interior is black with wrong color headliner seats are black vinyl with leather middle not sure if seats are original, also need to know how do you attach the trim if there's nothing around window?
