Hello kevin71! You don't have to install intake for the test, but follow all of the safety precautions. The spark plugs need to be removed from all 8 cylinders. The drivers side bank cylinders are labeled from the front of the engine back. They are 1,3,5,7. Passenger side front to back is 2,4,6 & 8. If your compression gauge is bouncing while you are trying to take a reading, the Shrader valve could be stuck open fron a piece of carbon or damaged. If you can't fix it, you'll need to borrow or buy a quality gauge. You'll want one with a hose and adaptor that screws into the spark plug hole. Summit, Jegs and any good autoparts store etc has them at a reasonable price. Accuracy here is very important in the diagnosis. Post if you have any questions. Good luck!
