Anyone done this Alternator upgrade.
« on: December 13, 2014 - 01:04:23 PM »
This is the upgrade kit for my style alternator. This would up the rating from 60A to 80A.
Really just the aftermarket stereo and amplifier additional draw that I want to account for.
I have ran a #8 AWG wire from the Alt. output to the starter relay with a fusible link as many here have.

http://store.alternatorparts.com/ho7005-chrysler-square-back-alternator-80-amp-upgrade-kit-1.aspx
Part # HO7005 Chrysler Square Back Alternator 80A Upgrade/Repair Kit $82.01 shipped
Just wanted to see if anyone has done this upgrade and how it went.

Another option would be Powermaster 7509 75A Chrysler Square Back Alternator 2V-Pulley Natural $124.89 shipped
http://kmjperformance.com/powermaster-7509-75a-chrysler-square-back-alternator-2v-pulley-natural.html

Not wanting to spend any more than needed, I like the $82.01 but only if it makes sense.

That's interesting, not sure the upgrade would fix your problem.  The Mopar alternators have an issue at low RPM.  Wonder where that 80amp is rated?
If it improves output by 20A at idle, that's nice.  But I doubt that's the case.

Yup, Sure would like to know if anyone has done either of these and what they have to say about their results.

Found this on Allpar.com...

They upgrade using a kit from JC Whitney. I was not able to find the JCW kit.

The stock alternator for a 70 was a round back.Yearone sells a 90amp factory looking replacement for 135.

Again, if the kit doesn't increase the output at idle, it's not worth the effort.
Would love to see an output (amps) vs RPM graph.

Installed the 80A alternator upgrade kit today. Waiting for better weather before I test it out.

I'll bring an Amp Clamp home and measure output at idle with nothing on and then slowly bring everything on; headlights, high beams, road lamps, heater blower, stereo at low volume and cranked up... I'll note the amps, voltage and RPM as well.
I guess I could take it to a buddy and have a load test put on it... I know they can load test a battery. I'm guessing they can load test an alternator too.  :dunno:

Very interested to see the results.
Any issues with the upgrade, matched the directions?

Very simple step by step instructions with pictures and all the parts matched. The picture of the kit above is pretty exact to what I received except that the picture of the stator looks black and white.
Here are a few pictures of the upgrade.
