How to use a 6.1 from an automatic car?

First, I am running a 6 speed...So what all is needed to take a motor from an automatic with the MDS and make it all work...
is there a pilot bearing needed...How do you stop the MDS

I can't help with the transmission question as I have only used automatics. Too disable the MDS just unplug the MDS solenoids. my self I would pull the solenoids and replace w factory plugs and replace the lifters.

Thanks twoterpilot, I'm assuming this would be the same for one of the new 392 6.4 hemi crate motors, most of the ones I see are for Autos, or have the MDS

6.1's don't have MDS, only 5.7's from 2005 and up in cars and 2006 and up in trucks.  6.4's use MDS, both truck and SRT. 

The pilot bearing for a 6.1 is pn# 53009180AB.

BTW, Holley has a plug and play controller and wiring for the GenIII Hemi.  Uses factory sensors.  Call me if you need some info.

Thanks Craig, I will take you up on that, looks like you have done this a few times... What about the 6.4s, Do you really need to disable the MDS? from an auto, I know there are a lot of things needed to activate it like speed sensors, that wont be on an older car?
You wouldn't happen to know a good part number for the 392 6.4 manual crate motor would you, I cant seem to find one anywhere to check pricing from a local dealer.

392 crate engines were discontinued.  5.7, 6.1.and 6.9L are what's available now.  Your best bet is a takeout 392 from a Challenger.

You should manually disable the MSDS by adding the lifter valley plugs. I have some at my house, they are the same for 5.7 and 6.1. These are some fancy aluminum ones, but I'm sure you can find them in the factory plastic variety for far less than 79 bucks.

Leaving the MDS solenoids in will not hurt anything, However if you are using an aftermarket cam I would suggest changing the MDS lifters.

How come those 6.4's are pretty affordable at $7895, and I read in other threads that the cost to build a new Hemi is between 20-30K?

Not for nothing, but if i wax considering changing out the 5.7 Hemi in my 2008 Mega Cab to a 6.4, what would be required?

Well the Mopar MSDS block off kit was only 8 bucks, is there any danger to leaving the solenoids in? How different are the lifters from the Non-MSDS motors?

MDS lifter and non MDS lifter.  Dimensionally the same.  See the pin hole and the pin that's halfway showing?  That pin locks the internal lifter bodies together, making it one piece.  When oil pressure is applied through the solenoid, the pin is pushed in and the internal body collapses enough to prevent the valve from opening.  This lifter beat the trunion bearing out, which then beat the snot out of the internal body, turning the internal so the pin would not lock.  So this lifter is in MDS mode forever.  Normally oil pressure from the solenoid is required to UNLOCK the pin, otherwise it stays locked and stays a conventional lifter.

If it was a complete forged stroker motor and you have no cores to work with yes those prices are correct.

The 392 Crate Motors we carry are new factory engines from the SRT Line up.
