rear area rattle ( Shocks )?
« on: December 16, 2014 - 03:14:11 PM »
Hey Gang..

As some already know, I just got my first E-body, a '70 Challenger T/A. Man, this thing is a rattle can. Everything seems to be tight. I did notice that the passenger side upper part of the rear shock wiggles a little. Do these things have to be rock solid and if not, rattle a lot? The driver's side is tight and I can't move it by hand from underneath. Also, any other notorious noise making areas?

Cheers,
Troy

The shocks shouldn't have any free play to rattle at all.
that would be a good start.
Also, check to see if the exhaust is hitting the underside.

I had an anoying know from the rear, everything was tight, shocks looked fairly new, when I bounced the rear of the car I could hear a knock, shocks were tight but one had something going on inside, when i put my hand on it while someone bounced the car you could feel it, swapped out the shocks, knock gone.

The rest of the car.

Seriously, this is another good case for installation of sub-frame connectors. The more solid you make the chassis the fewer rattles that are introduced by flex, the better your body gaskets seal, the less noise you hear.

The upper mounts on my 70 were literally ovaled out from previous owners having air shocks (I assume). I had a trusted friend weld in 4 flat washers, problem solved and that was over 20 years ago..... Hopefully not your problem but very possible.
