1973 Plymouth Barracuda Value????
« on: December 17, 2014 - 08:38:21 PM »
New to the forum and just looking for some input. I have a chance to buy a 1973 Plymouth Barracuda, not a "Cuda" originally, but turned into one. The owner has installed a 1969 340 with a 727 auto, 8 3/4 rear with sure grip 323's. It has PDB, PS , Console with the Slapstick shifter. The paint and interior look decent to very good, the engine bay needs to be cleaned up but the car is supposed to run very well. Have talked to the owner on and off for about a week now and he seems pretty cool. Hope to go see it this weekend. I would rate the car between a 2.5-3 on the "Old Car Report" Price Guide, with one being perfect and 6 being a parts car. So what I was wondering is what do you guys think a Barracuda like this should sell for. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading this.

Welcome to the site, be sure to introduce yourself in the Newbie forum.  As for the '73 Barracuda, the value is heavily dependent on amount of rust and condition of the interior, engine, suspension, tranny, tires, body, paint.  A #3 car is still a really nice car in good shape with no rust (that is just a plain killer on cost) and runs/drives great, would be worth $20-25k.  :2cents:

When you go see it, take a bunch of pics, and then take more.  Post them here and guys will chime in.

I agree with the above . . . Need some pics for sure!  I think $20-25 may be alittle high . . . .

Thanks for the replies, they're much appreciated. He has the price listed in the low twenties, just wanted to see if that was an appropriate price. Thanks

I think top money for what you described is $17 or 18k. The only way I could see over $20k in that condition is if it was a numbers matching 340 car.

:iagree:  73/74 bring lower $$ as it is, non-matching drops it more. if it had matching drivetrain, low-mid 20s would be about right. the auto makes it a little less desirable to most folks, so a little drop there as well. hidden rust should be well looked for as well, lower rear quarters, windshield frames (very common rust out area in the lower front corners - if he lets you, let water pour over the seams/corners and check inside to see if you can find any leaks up under the dash frame. this is not cheap and easy to repair)

Thanks for all the input guys, much appreciated. If it's in good condition I was thinking about offering $17,000-$18, 500. I'll post pics after I've checked it out.

Went and checked the Barracuda out, tried to post some pics but it said that my file was too big, even when I tried to post just one pic. Anyway, remember, it's a 1973 Plymouth Barracuda that has been trimmed out to be a "Cuda". The original engine was a 318, now has a 1969 340 in it, with a Holley 750 double pumper and an Edelbrock performance manifold.

The Bad, quite a bit of bubbling in the vinyl top, leakage on the top end of the engine, looks like it needs new valve cover gaskets and intake manifold gaskets, quite a bit of moister up there. Rust in the trunk, although looks mostly like surface rust, will need new paint and tires, carpet covering the rear package tray.

The Good, body is straight, gaps are good, quarter panels and floor pans all look good, interior looks good, except for the carpet covering the package tray. Did a cold start with the engine, started right up, no smoke, ran strong, again the problem was the leakage mentioned above. Oil and tranny fluid looked good as did the power steering fluid.

The guy wants $19, 999 for it, what do you think after the description given. What would you offer for this Barracuda. Sorry about the pics, will try again tomorrow. If anyone ha a suggestion on how to post them let me know. Thanks for all of your input.

bubbling of the top is a big repair concern. without seeing underneath, hard to say. worst case scenario is a roof replacement (available), but blows the cost. sounds more like a $12-15K car to me (engine repair, rust under the vinyl, rust in other places you can't see yet)

Thanks Ec_Co, I thought he was way too high. The desire to own a Challenger/Cuda is so much sometimes you start to rationalize so that you can convince yourself the car is worth what's being asked.  Guess I should just keep looking. I'm kind of a weird Hybrid guy anyway. I'm a Ford/Mopar fan, have a 1970 Mercury Cougar, 1970 Ford Ranchero and a 2010 Dodge Challenger R/T Classic. Would love to have a classic Barracuda or Challenger to go with the new one though. Need to just keep looking.

:iagree:  The engine gaskets are minor, unless there is something else wrong.  As for the bubbling top, I would steering clear of this one unless he would knock off $7k+ as this is far from a #3 car.  There are plenty of cars out there, but you did the right thing by going to see the car in person.  That car will sit for a long time at that price.

I was stumped on adding pictures too.  My fix was adding them to my photobucket account, and then copy/paste the img link to the forum
