what color primer under vinyl
« on: December 23, 2014 - 04:06:19 PM »
Team,
My cuda has a black vinyl roof. according to my paperwork, build sheets etc it was not delivered with a vinyl roof. with that said, the fit and finish is fantastic, and looks to have been put in place long ago, I had a couple of bubbles under the vinyl where it covers the filler pannel so I lifted it the other day to see how bad things were, to my delight they were just small surface blisters that cleaned up great with no holes or huge damage (what I will say is bubble under vinyl look much bigger than they are). Now, my question is, factory fitted vinyl is normally layed over primed sheet metal from my understanding, what color is the factory primer?????? my car has recieved a respray at some point in its life and certain parts under the vinyl edges are painted but, when I lifted the filler panel area it had like a red zinc colur primer??

Im just trying to work out if this vinyl had been put on by maybe the dealer before the owner took delivery :dunno: :clueless:
Im about to have the body work done on the car early next year, and am seriously thinking of ditching the vinyl as it "isn't factory"

My original 1970 Plymouth Barracuda was body color, Vitamin C Orange under the top.

My 74 Challenger under-roof was black, just like the car. If you like the roof and it's done so well, why lose it to please the build sheet gods?  :dunno:

Jimynick,
based on the rust bubbles that were under it on the filler pannel, its gotta come off for the repaint im having done soon, its either install a new vinyl or not, I would want the roof re painted in any case and a new vinyl would have to be installed, as indicated, I like the look, I dont like what they can hide and the associated maintenance so its going, had the bc sheet listed it I would put it back as its a numbers matching car and although I have upgraded the suspension and done some mechanical mods, I dont want to vary the body in any way in case it needs to be 100% restored to original.

if that all  makes sense

Heres the prob with original vynil tops:  Just like the REST of the car, the factory never intended for their cars to be still on the roads 20-30-40 years later:  In fact they really didn't want them to be.   It wouldn't have been good for future new car sales, etc  Plus any real rust prevention than a thin coat of primer wouldv'e the bean counters lotsa money.  And trust me when I say that Dodge/Plymouth did not have allot of money to play with in the late 60's early 70's.  Sales were very low in numbers, compared to GM/Ford

There was no real "rust prevention" added to the cars back then:  Expensive and more time on the line to do so

So lets talk vynil tops.  In reality, these tops take very little maintenance.  As long as you don't tear them, maybe give wipe of vynil conditioner every now and then, and they will last for years.

The prob with the original vynil tops were they were hastily put on, and frankly, moisture will enter between the top of the car (Paint) and the vynil material over the years.   Yes, that can happen to one over the years as well, ones that have been recently put on for restos, BUT:  Most installations use better primer/sealer and  adhesive (and vynil material) than the factory would have ever considered back in the day

Go vynil  They look great
