Sly / 71 A78 Challenger 383 ci from the factory
« on: December 26, 2014 - 10:02:17 AM »
Hello guys, it's been a while I'm reading some threads here, it looks like the biggest Cuda/Challenger resource on the internet !

So let's introduce myself...  :burnout:

I'm Sly, 31 years old, I live near Lyon, France.

I always dreamt of owning a classic US car but only had an opportunity to make my dream reality in 2011, I bought a red 72 Mustang Grande, same model that my step father owned in the 80s.
He promised to help me restoring it as I was a total newbie. We did tons of things on the car but I've never been really satisfied with it. The reason is I always wanted a Challenger, or else, a Cuda, but budget was a problem since here in France, prices of those car are going skyrocket each year. In 2013 I decided time had come to sell the Mustang and asked the bank if they could help to buy a Challenger  :money:
After a few months I finally sold the Mustang a faire price, and trust me that wasn't an easy car to sell... The Mustang Grande isn't really appreciated by Mustang lovers, and it's not the most beautiful car from that era.
So I decided I won't do the same mistake : my goal was to find a Challenger or Cuda with great base value. My dream was a big block (or 340 ci) car, with the four speed transmission, in good shape.
But when I looked to the prices, I had to reconsider. Budget was 20000 € (which is approx. $24300).

Then I fell in love with a car that was for sale in Germany, approximately 900 km from where I live. I gathered as much infos as possible to be sure the car was worth it as I planned to keep as long as possible : a white '71 Challenger with a 383 2-bbl from the factory converted to a 4 bbl, automatic transmission. It kind of looked like the Vanishing Point car, which was very exciting. Underbody looked very well, but the seller told me "the car is great but the only thing is that it has rust under the vinyl roof". It had a bizarre Shelby scoop on the rally hood, and a broken grill, with velvet interior. It was sold as an SE Challenger with the small rear window. I learned later that it was a quite rare 71 Challenger that had the A78 formal roof package option.
I wanted to go and see the car by myself before buying it, but due to health problem I couldn't. I finally decided to buy it judging only by the pics and infos I had.
On august 4, 2013, the car arrived during the night on a trailer. One of the best moment in my life for sure ! I was in love !!

It's been one year and a half I own this car, and appreciated every second of it.

I will post some pics and details tonight :)

At first I wanted not to work on the car until months/years, but as you all know it needed some work here and there !
Anyway the Challenger runs great, is not perfect but I can take my time to fix things here and there. Here's a list of what has been done :
  - we changed the old Edelbrock carb that was worn with a Holley Street Avenger 570 cfm rebuilt carb.
  - ignition wires changed
  - one muffler exploded one month after I received the car, it had rust holes here and there. We replaced them with Flowmaster 40s
  - we changed the M/T valve covers with Mopar Performance covers
  - when I saw the prices of a rebuilt grill, I fell from my chair  :22yikes: so I gave it to rebuild to a friend who did a great job using polyester. It's not 100% perfect but it's so much better ! We chose to copy the R/T grill and the result is really cool ! Maybe I'll buy a new one if someone build a perfect copy of the original grill (like the 71 Cuda grill repro), or NOS one someday.
  - we removed the scoop from the hood but holes were drilled here and there so we had to fill them with resin. We applied the 70 R/T sticker on the hood (which is not the original one, it had a flat standard hood). This goes pair with the grill and now it looks really good :)
  - we moved the ignition coil on the side

Thanks a lot guys ! Yes it looks and sounds good

I plan to do the following in the near future :
  - rebuilt the rear end : I'm sure this Challenger has been running in the past since It has a 8 3/4 rear end, 489 case with 4.30:1 ratio. It's not really cruisable on long trips and I think a complete rebuilt will do it fine. I found a pair of NOS 3.23 pinions and I'm already in touch with Cass Eslick from DrDiff to get the good rebuilt kit.
  - change the exhaust manifolds. the Chally has old Hooker Competition headers, the left one is rubbing on the steering rod. I've been told that unless you buy some expensive TTIs, all the aftermarket headers will have clearance issues. So I want to get back to the good old original high performance manifolds. I already found one for the right side (I don't need matching numbers), a friend of me had one. Now I need to buy the left one on eBay and the right bolts.
  - It has 14 inch wheels in the front and 15 in the back : I want to put new 15 inch rally wheels and tires in the front.
  - put a new transmission mount. Actual one is broken in two parts.
  - change the intake manifold : the motor has an old Offenhauser dual port manifold, I heard it's not the best at all performance-wise, even for a street car. I'd like to install a new valley pan and Edelbrock Performer intake.
  - change the crankshaft pulley because it's worn and I don't want to see it fo through the radiator :) But I still need to know if it's externally or internally balanced.
  - put a new turn signal switch
  - new shocks : it has stock shocks and they look very old, I can feel that when I throw the car into the corners. I planned to install Koni because they have different settings
  - new front and rear valances

I hope to do all this this year  :working:

And tons of other things of course !

I also have an exhaust leak due to one manifold bolt broken into the head on the right side. It was a small leak when I bought the car but now it's a lot bigger, due to a failing gasket :
