Author Topic: Is this a good deal? 1970 440 and 727 with a Sure Loc rear end $1000 for all  (Read 883 times)

Found a 1970 Chrysler rear end, came out of a New Yorker. The guy says it is a 2.76 ratio with SureLoc, 8.75
He also has a 1970 440, with a 727 transmission. He wants to get rid of it all together and will not split it up. He is asking a $1000 or OBO.
I do not need the motor or transmission. Whats the rear end worth? i may offer him less and then just junk the other stuff.

I got my 440, 727 combo for $400, and they ran.  An 8.75 with an open rear-end should only go for about $100 - $150.  So. I would say it is on the high side.  :2cents:

Do not scrap a 70 engine or trans  they will sell for a lot more money than you realize. Also a sure lock is a powere lower lock, unless it's a sure grip, then it would be the clutch type.  even with the 276 gear, you can get close to 400 just for that. The big rear brakes are also sought out for with drums and an easy 100 bucks.  If you got the money and the engine isn't cracked, then I think it's a good deal. If you can talk him down a bit, even better.

Is their a quick easy way to tell if it is a sure grip, and what kind of shape it is in? i assume the only way to tell if it is any good is by tearing it down.

you can bind on axles and try to twist the other. If it takes more than a prybar to turn, it may just be a good one.  There is a tq number, but I can't remember. A cone can be repaired 1 time if bad
