15 min. starter removal, and now I need a new one.
« on: December 29, 2014 - 08:23:28 PM »
I was sweating bullets for most of the day, thinking how terrible it was going to be to drop my starter out of the Challenger. Did some searches and i found that most of you that have posted in the past, have had issues with headers and other. I have tti headers on a 440, with a mini-starter. Anyhow i jacked the car up and popped the torsion bar out and was able to pull the starter out with minimal cussing and knuckle skin removal. I can't hardly express how grateful i was that it was that easy. It almost makes up for my OOP's, I CAN'T BELIEVE I JUST DID THAT!
Anyhow, i need to get a new mini starter. Anyone have a good in-expensive source?
Are their any of the mini starters that have the old style whiney dodge starter sound?

TTI are awesome
No mini have the gear reduction whine
what is wrong with the starter , most I have seen the contact wear down but these can be replaced for $5 for the pair & are easily accessed . the other trick I use is to get mini starters at the wreckers for $20 or so & just install new contatcs , good to go for a long time , stay away from Powermaster if you buy new , a rebuilt from a local parts store will work fine too

Ya, seems like 90% of the time, things go much easier than we feared. But we just don't like those
times when we occassionally screw up!  As they say, "That's Hotroddin!!

Easy?  Did I read right?  You had to remove the torsion bar, that doesn't sound easy?

I bought this one from NAPA for my SB.  Worked great, but I did miss the Mopar starter whine.

Yep, you heard right. Before i installed the new torsion bars, i had sanded the paint off the ends so they would slide in easier. I also had built a bolt on grip years ago when i took the old ones out. Just tightened it down on the bar and gave it a whack and out it popped.

I had to replace the small wire going to the stater solenoid. i overtightened and the terminal broke out of the starter.   :swear:

Will a regular size starter fit?  Oreilly Auto has a couple of rebuilt options for less than $40.

For what it's worth. I got this mini starter off Amazon. Been about 10 months and works great so far.

I can drop my mini-starter out without doing anything to the headers.

The headers were a pain in other ways though!!!

My mini starter will go in and out without having to move the Hooker Super Comp 2 inch headers.
