Modify original seats
« on: January 01, 2015 - 10:48:05 AM »
I like the look of my stock seats, I would like them more adjustable and more comfortable with some side support though. Have not found any aftermarket or other seats that I want to put in my car. Now, I have a chance to pick up a pair of decent 6-way electric adjustable seats for a couple of hundrerd bucks. I wonder if I can make my stock seat frame sit on the adjustable base of theese seats somehow, have not seen anyone that made a mod like that before. Would be way easier if the floorpan was flat also (don't wanna change that though). I guess I won't know for sure unless I buy them and try, but I wonder if anyone has any input or experience with this.
I like to keep the height as close as possible to stock. I found a mechanical 6-way adjustable base at Classic Ind. (see pict), that seems to be pretty high also, and expensive, anyone used those?

Six way seat tracks were an available option in 70-71.. I have a buddy who collected extra six way tracks back when they were around, he's 6'5" & they make E bodies much more comfortable for tall guys... Personally I've never cared for them but I'm 5'10" & I'm pretty comfortable in the standard seating location....

As far as the stock seats, I've seen a few Year One ads for upgraded/modified foam & seat covers done in the original style but with side bolsters... TMI does them for Ford & GM but I just checked their website & didn't see anything for Mopars...

I'm 5'10" also, stock seat height is fine for me, my wife is shorter and has to sit on a pillow when she drives my Challenger though, and she can't get the seatback up so she mostly leans forward
and not resting her back, not very comfortable... would be nice to be able to adjust the height. I asked a local upholstery shop about custom made seat covers and foam, but he estimated
around $4000 in work plus material, seems a bit pricey to me...

I've often thought of modifying the OE seats with more side bolster, etc.  But, in my opinion, one of the most comfortable stockish aftermarket seats are the Corbuea GTS-II models.   Look them up, try to sit in them and you'll see what i mean... very comfortable, good bolster, etc.   They sell for ~$375 each; I suggest adapting your floor brackets with a couple plates as needed... that's what I've done.. makes things alot easier.   Currently, I have a pair of Recaro imitations (JCWhitney.. "Garage Pro")... lt-wt, high-side bolster for autocross/road course sessions, etc... and they were low-priced (under $400 for both a cpl years ago).
Autocross/road racers go in deeper... and come out harder!

I looked at the Corbuea seats, looks good, Brads seats looks good also, but I just want mine to look stock, so I think I'm gonna buy those seats in the pictures I uploaded here and see if I can somehow modify my seatframes to fit those bottoms, then add some sidesupport, my frames are pretty bad, so its not a big deal if I ruin them, if I'm ever going back to OEM restored I have to get new frames anyways. Those seats are Porsche btw, pretty good looking seats, but brown leather.

Are they in good shape? How much do you want for them? I ship my parts to WA, from there a friend puts them in a container when he ships cars to Sweden. Costs me very little.

I'm in Canada , on the other side of the continent ..... They look in good shape to me. They have been recovered at some point not in the correct vinyl though

Aha, still a long way to ship then. I have the same problem with those Porsche seats now, price is right but shipping is more than the seats...
