Leftover 70 parts on a 71 ?
« on: January 01, 2015 - 07:05:36 PM »
Okay...I know there are documented cases of 1971 cars getting leftover 1970 parts....

BUT

Is a September 9th 1970 too late for a 1971 Cuda to receive a 70 console ? How about a 1970 Chrome racing mirror?
Can anybody confirm theses oddities ?

Seems late to me.... :dunno:

Absolutely not!

My car was bought from a dealership only 1 year old and it had the 70' seat belt holder type center console in it.
Production date: Dec 70'

Here are a couple more examples, 1971 Challenger R/T 340 SPD 810 has a 1970 trunk floor and 1970 doors and regulators. 1971 Gran Coupe with SPD 803 has the 70 doors, trunk floor and mirrors. It would be interesting to know how many of the old parts made it to the new model change overs.

That survivor '71 hemi Challenger R/T that will be in the Mecum auction in a few weeks has a SBD in early November but has a '70 console.  My '71 Challenger has a SBD of late October and it has a '71 console.  Mine isn't a survivor so I can't say for sure that is the console it was born with.  But all in all from the stories I hear it sounds like there were a hodgepodge of '71 and '70 parts going into production '71 E bodies through the end of the calender year 1970.

I had heard the consoles made their way in to a lot of early 71's, well into the first few months of production, had never heard about outside mirrors.

After reading about 440 motors with six pack rotating assemblies showing up in motor homes and and who knows how many other vehicles, it could be quite possible for left over parts to be used until they ran out and were forced to use the newer stuff. But when they are putting a car together in say an hour or so, there is not much time to pick and choose.

At Sept 9/70, the car would have almost certainly had a '70 console instead of '71.  Transition was sometime in November for E-bodies.  My former 340 shaker ragtop that you restored was Dec '70 build and had the proper '71 console in it.

Lots of carryover for sheetmetal too.  '70 PS inner fenders until some point in September.  The 383 Shaker R/T you just finished (925 SPD) still had a '70 trunk floor, though it seems that sheetmetal was hit/miss.  Almost as if they found an old pallet of '70 metal every so often, and used it up on the line.
