E-Body Hood Scoops

I was thinking about to open my Ralley Hood Scoops from my 74`Barracuda to get cold and fresh air for the engine .
Will this work when i open the "fake" Hood Scoops that the air could flow there into ?
When there was cold air at the top of the carburator it must be able that get some extra horsepower , or ?

It would only be worth doing if you build an air box to block engine heat from getting to your filter, more or less functioning like a cold air intake as opposed to a ram air, the "scoops" are just to small and to low to build pressure. Would it give you some hp...yes, but not enough to justify the effort. I have seen those hoods sectioned ,to make those inlets large enough to be effect ram air scoops.

At a show last summer, I saw someone's beat Cuda which they did precisely what you mentioned.

Unfortunately it looked like a hack job and never finished with an air box, etc. The guy probably came to the same conclusion far too late.

Are the Cuda scoops different than the Challenger?  My '71 Challenger did not have the plate blockers and the scoops were wide open.  To install them I just had to buy the plates and hardware.

There really isn't a noticeable ram air type effect if you open up the faux hood inlets.  Thats because there is a very stale air layer that flows close to the hood surface.  But it would certianly at least cool down the engine compartment, a plus.   But then there are water issues.

I was thinking for myself that a Ram Air are not able to make , unless you welded under the hood something together .
It seems to me that an open Hood Scoops always makes more sense as closed fake ones .
There must not always be a Ram Air , only the cold Air in the Engine Room will be also everytime better as
the hot air what will be when the Hood Scoops are closed .

Chrysler had done a fair amount of aero work by the time these scoops were released. They weren't made functional for two reasons: they were not high enough in the air stream to capture adequate air flow and the two holes opened up are not large enough to feed a well built big block at upper rpm range. If you look at any Chrysler competition scoop of the area, you will see that they are taller and/or larger for these reasons. EG, the RO/WO, A12, AAR, and TA scoops.

Would they help exhaust some heat by allowing some boundary layer air to flow through them and out through the engine bay or by convection when sitting at a stop, yes, provided you did not enclose them in an air box.

If you did want to open them up and build an air box under the hood to enclose the air filter and mate to the hood, they would feed cooler air to the engine than what you would get under hood. This air flow would probably be adequate for the street engine under 400 cid and living under 4000 rpm. Beyond that, I would be afraid of limiting the air flow of what the engine would need for peak performance.

Now, would it look cool and be unique? Absolutely. But from a pure performance perspective there are better way to achieve the goal.

My first cuda had the rear part of the horizontal slots cut out/removed.
it helped with some air flow in the engine bay but that's about all you get out of that stale air column.

Looked cool when you were up close cause you could just make out the hemi orange through the slots.
