Barracuda Wood Door Inserts
« on: January 03, 2015 - 07:51:04 PM »
Do any of the aftermarket  companies make the woodgrain door and rear seat panel inserts for a 1972 Barracuda ?
Possibly match the grain of the Rally Dash.

Trivia Question: How did the dash board get it's name?

Don't know about the first question.
Second question, I guess dash's were originally made of wood?

I'm not aware of a woodgrain insert in a 72 Barracuda....  Are you referring to Gran Coupe inserts? If so they were not available in 72.... And they are not reproduced... Very hard to find and $$$$ these days...

Thanks for the answer regarding the door panels. I thought in this day and age that someone would have come up with an insert to give the door panels the wood grain look to balance out the wood on the Rally Gauges and the wood grain on the console. I realize that the 340 Cuda was not a luxury car. But I wanted to give this one a little boost on style during this restoration.

As far as the Trivia : The name dates back to the horse and buggy days when dashing horses kicked up mud, splashing the passengers riding behind them. The dashboard was derived to protect them.

That was a good guess DODJ!!

I had to hunt for these inserts. There are several of these wooden insert panels on eBay right now for $$$. They are out there, just keep looking :)

1st of all, Gran COupe-style door inserts were only offered in 1970 and I THINK also in 1971 w/the leather option.

No one repro's them I'm afraid.  I think RestoRick can restore them, but not if they're real bad I bet.  $$$ to restore them I think.  Best to find some mint originals, which are VERY hard to find these days.

Found that in the parts for sale section I think that's what you are looking for.

The Wood Grain inserts for the doors were made of the same material as the exterior ding moulding (V5_), just with a brown (and in some cases red) color and wood texture, and were 70-71 only.  They are very flexible, and the attachments on the back are glued on. The same trim was used on the dash pad of Dodge Monaco's.  They should be easy to re-pop, but I don't know who would take up that task.

I was thinking about molding some acrylic and making a red set. I ran across some pretty neat looking stuff that has low properties and is easy to work with as play-doh: ShapeLock plastic, Friendly Plastic, ...... it is scientifically known as polycaprolactone.

Polycaprolactam is available everywhere you look. It is a thermosetting plastic. Save a couple dozen milk jugs, ziplock bags and water bottles, slowly melt them down and pour into a mold. ;)
