Exhaust manifold gaskets ?
« on: January 04, 2015 - 11:34:08 AM »
The 572 Hemi were having built will have aluminum heads and were using the Year One ropop exhaust manifolds. I was going to use the Percys soft aluminum gaskets, or should I use no gaskets with high temp sealer ?    :feedback:

I wonder if copper embossed gaskets are the way to go. I really dont like the gaskets that TTI has with their headers .

I've used copper twice, once on sbc and one on sbf, both leaked. The Percys fixed both problems, but that was with headers.

The factory never used gaskets & every time  I  have used them it caused leaks , I would bolt them straight onto the heads with no gasket

The purpose of using gasket... within the aftermarket world... is simply to accomodate slight warpage, pittin or non-perfect surface conditions that become existant after years of usage.   In a "new" environment (ne castings, new surface conditions, etc, the need for gaskets becomes less, especialy while theis no liquid fluid to be sealing.  The OEs typically didn't use exhaust gaskets becaue the surfacs were pretty much perfect, thu, not requiring exhaust manifold gaskets.

Tubular pipes (such as headers) tend to flex and vibrate and can benefit from using gasket for long-term sealing.

All RTV -- even the so-called "hi-temps" -- eventually reverts back to a liquid when subjected to long-term high-heat... it doesn't last forever!
