Drive Shaft Damper? on Track Pac Charger
« on: January 04, 2015 - 08:33:00 PM »
I was looking at a '70 Track Pac R/T Charger over the weekend and noticed underneath the car there is what looks like a large damper on the front of end of the driveshaft.  Does anyone know what this is and whether it was a factory item?

Dampers/inertia rings were used on allot of 67-69 vintage Mopar Hi-Perf cars.. I haven't noticed them on an 70 cars but maybe an early car might have gotten an old part thrown at it... Or more likely the driveshaft was damaged at some point & the replacement came from an earlier car....

Obviously the new zinc plated hardware holding the seat track along with the bolts holding the trans mount have been changed ..  So it's not like the car is a pristine survivor, it's had parts swapped around some.... And the undercoating may well be hiding some stuff too...

Thanks.  The car was raced in it's earlier years, so that might explain the inertia ring, not sure.  It only has 23,000 miles on it with the last 16,000 to car shows, etc...  Of course the earlier miles were probably hard miles.  The car spent most of its time in Georgia so I believe the car is as solid as the current owner says.  Original engine and trans are long gone.  In its place is a correct Hemi 18 spline A833 and a 440 out of a '68 R/T Charger.  Back to the inertia ring, what purpose does it serve and is there a down side to having it stay on?  Thanks.

Doesn't hurt a thing, leave it....  Then again if a correct 70 D/S pops up it's easy to swap out... It's supposed to cancel harmonic vibration....

Thanks.  Could this be a factory installed part I saw on this car or was it likely added because of its racing duties?  If possibly factory, is there a code or package (e.g. A33) that verifies this?

I had a 68 Charger R/T, 440, automatic, a/c that came with the same drive shaft. It wasn't a track pac car.

It was likely added because the original shaft was damaged/misplaced & this one fit... Seriously doubt it's original...

I would say that is a replacement, i have never seen that type shaft on even early 69 B models. My latest one was an original 69 GTX built in August 68 and it did not even have that type of shaft. As was mentioned i would run it for now until you find the correct one unless extra weight is of concern
