MAGNUM FORCE TUBULAR SFC SUBFRAME CONNECTORS
« on: January 06, 2015 - 06:27:58 PM »
I'm eventually going install SFC to my Challenger... its used for competition autocross and hi-speed lapping road course events.  Street driven to/from those events.

I like the ground clearance that I've seen with the Magnum Force TUBULAR SFCs.   Has anyone here used them?  Do you have opinions?

Has anyone tried the Magnum Force TUBULAR SFCs and taken them off for another kind... and found any improvement?

Auto Rust Technicians (ART) is another brand I'm considering... their rectangular kind, not the shaped floor contour type.

The club rules I run with don't allow the fully floor-welded type, nor do they allow the floor to be cut or modified.   The SFC can only be attached to the front/rear frame rails, as well as to one point in the middle (such as the M<F tubular SFC attach).

The Hothkis SFC are not legal because they attach to the leaf spring front mounting point (not the frame rail).

Your opinions are appreciated.   My Challenger is actually a 1972 bopdy that has been cloned into a T/A for legal class rules, and it has a 340/727.

T/Anks ahead!
Autocross/road racers go in deeper... and come out harder!

See  MOPAR ACTION MAGAZINE, AUGUST 2006 ISSUE for featured article and details on my autocross T/A.

No personal experience with them.

Pros- they are 1.25 round tube, so they have ground clearance. They had the additional strap to bolt to the floor. Twin tube design doubles the effective area. Looks like they are contoured to more closely follow the floor pan. They bolt in. They saddle the rear frame and sandwich the front so you have decent mounting positions. You can get them in all sorts of pretty colors.

Cons- They are 1.25 round tube so they have less ground clearance that a 1" square tube. The additional strap adds weight. Twin tube design in .095 wall means they are going to be heavy. They are contoured to the floor so they have a built in flex point. They bolt in. They saddle the rear frame and sandwich the front instead of connecting into other areas of the frame. They seem a bit pricey for the job they perform, IMO.

I have never seen anyone compare the various style available. Short of buying ever style of bolt in connector and doing a deflection test, I don't see anyone actually doing it. I think Auto Rust did some demonstrations videos of improvements with their stiffening kits, but they didn't quantify it in actual degrees using SAE standards.

I'm running 1X3 tube. Granted home made, they are welded in , but could be bolted I suppose (a little more fab time). Good clearance and the steel cost me $10!  :dunno:  :clueless:

I have the ART ones on my Challenger.  The rear seat foot well needed to be massaged upwards a tiny bit for them to fit w/o welding the floorboard.  I had to elongate the hole for the parking brake cable.  They are about 1/4" lower than the frame.  If you'd like I can dig up some pictures.

I apologize, A-body content!

I used 1.5"x3"x.120" tubing on my Duster. The E-bodies are a little more exciting because the connectors run at a slight angle from the rear rails to the front so they don't land on the torsion bar sockets, and the rear rails are slightly splayed. The rear rails are also slightly narrower (width of the rail itself), and don't hang down as much at the intersection of the floor. I used the 1.5" tubing because it basically laid flat on the floor with the rail against the inside of the tubing in the back.

Not sure if your class will allow the amount of overlap I used of the rails. I also plated the torsion bar sockets to match the landing plates of the subframe connectors, and keep the socket from breaking the welds at the crossmember (an issue with some A-bodies). Either way, fabricating your own connectors is pretty simple. I like how the ART connectors step at the rear rails, but that front overlap is as ugly as sin. Bigs has the right idea, I think you could make great use of some 1.5" x3" tubing. It would need more of a step at the back than Big's used, more like the ART connectors, but you should still be able to get them to land flat on the front crossmember since the ART subframes look to be 2x2. Basically it would look like the ART subframe connectors, but flat with the front crossmember and with a little less step hanging down in the back.

Could you guys notice a big difference?  And what was it (body roll, torque twist, other)?

Fewer squeaks and rattles, window seals fit better so less wind whistle, doors opened and closed smoother...oh, you mean performance gains. Hard to measure by the seat of the pants, but everything just feels more solid. When pushed, it feels more planted. I suppose that is all the result of allowing the suspension to better do what its designed to do.

:iagree:  otherwise the whole car is a big torsion bar
