door lock link rods
« on: January 09, 2015 - 07:49:24 PM »
When we put the door latches back on 1970 challenger there were no rods connecting the cylinder lever to the door latch.  Just received the parts in the mail today but can't figure out how to install them.  Should there be a clip or bushing of some sort to hold the ends in place?  No matter how we put them in they just fall back out.  Anybody have a picture or diagram of how they are installed?

This is all I have to help, you need those plastic clips.  I believe the "green" ones are for the right side.

I've never seen that type of clip used on the lock cylinder rods. I can see how they would work, but usually there's an insert in the door latch that the rod "clicks" into. :2cents:

That's what they look like when not in the cylinder, here's a pic of it on the rod. Also, those plastic clips usually discolor to the point where they look black and you can barely make out the red/green colors

I hope I'm talking about the same thing and what the OP is asking.

Not in the dozens of dozens of E Bodies I've taken apart. I've never seen the style clip on that rod :2cents:

Might be a 73-74 thing  :clueless:

Here's the plastic insert that I'm talking about. This is the only style fastener that I've come across on an E Body :2cents:

Hmmmm, we must be talking about 2 different fasteners/clips. My red and green ones are like those 2 plastic white ones in your pictures.
I hope all of this info is somewhat helping out the original poster.

The ones you have posted are used on the rod from the exterior door handle to the door latch. From the interior door handle at the latch, and on both ends of the rod from the inside lock lever to the latch. Various lefts and rights,FIVE in total.

They are NOT used on the lock cylinder rod that the original poster is asking about. :2cents:

Anlauto you are right about it being the lock cylinder rod.  Wow do I feel silly.  That plastic piece is there at the bottom.  (lock is still in door and it looked like a rivet, so we were using the wrong hole)  Anyway, tried it and now I just have to figure out how the top fits and which one is for which side door (tomorrows project).  Why does everything have to be so complicated.  This has been our first attempt at car restoration and fast becoming our last. (doubtful)

I don't think they are a serviceable part.  As I said, something like what JayBee posted might work if you could find them in the correct size.

Are you sure the latches don't have the plastic inserts ?
