Circle track late model pavemnet build. MOPAR chassis!
« on: January 14, 2015 - 07:46:41 PM »
I have a very good buddy that builds a lot of racecars around here. With all the bumpstop  set ups I got to thinking how great a Mopar front end would be with the current rules . It took me 3 years of putting the bug in his ear to build one. So I gave him a k-frame and some late b body LCA's and some torsion bars. And he/we came up with this. He is super pumped to get it on the track. It's funny other racers think he's nuts as all they know is Chevy based suspensions. The 318 and /6 torsion bars should work great at dropping the car into the bump stops. He said it's the best car he's built from a geometry standpoint. It's fun to wind someone up and get them to build it!  :grinyes:

What can you tell us about a bumpstop setup? Theory? Advantages?

Well it's been "all the rage" for 5-7 years now at the track I used to work at. ::)  The advantage as I see it with torsion bars they are lower in the chassis and closer to the center ( weight) They don't wear out like conventional springs. Some guys are spending like 500 and up for one spring that last about half a season.  :screwy:
Easy to set ride heights, coil springs are progressive, not so with torsion bars. The front weights are less with this front clip than a traditional coil spring set up.  Frame rails are smaller and lower .

Cool. I just did some reading on it. So will small block torsion bars and a huge sway bar with some adjustable bump stops make the "to do list" on the challenger?

I'll stick with the 1.120" torsion bars as I have a BB but I'll do the rest with sway bars. Beings a street car 99% of the time bump stops like used on a circle track car wouldn't make for a very comfortable ride.  :grinno:

Nice! I notice the K is reversed as well to put even more weight rearward. What type of engine set back rules does he have to adhere to? First spark plug in line with the upper ball joint? Makes for a good argument for high caster angles.

 :clapping:   I was wondering if/when someone would notice that.   With a "stock" front frame section they are allowed an additional 3" set back from the first spark plug/upper ball joint. Tube cars are first spark plug lined up with upper ball joint.
It's funny the few racers that have seen it..... they are whining about heim joints used in the upper control arms? :screwy:  They just can't seem to get it through there minds that Mopars don't have cross shafts stock , like Chevy's do.  ::)

Ahhh, sneaky way to gain some more set back with the "stock" stub, eh. Nice move!

Don't those chevy guys know they can get heim jointed control arms that bolt in? http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Adjustable-A-Arm-with-Cross-Shaft-Offset-Type-7-3-4-Inch,2118.html

Although I will admit, I'm thinking of converting my Challenger to chevy style upper arms.

 Ya they aren't allowed those.

I understand that, cheap and lots available.  I found these for my other buddy's Mopar street stock if he needs them.

So they can't use heim jointed uppers? Yes, chalk up another on to the mopar camp!

Those tubular units are interesting looking. Not a bad price either.

Yeah, they are cheap. I can put a pair with new ball joints under the car for around $120. They also are available in sizes from 8" to 10" in .25" increments so I can adjust the camber gain anywhere I like it to be.  I'm looking at some offset units that should yield 5-7* of positive caster when installed straight up and have the ability to only go higher from there.

Certainly no where as trick as the stuff your friend is putting together.
