Sound deadener overkill
« on: January 17, 2015 - 10:42:29 AM »
Hey all!
Im finishing up with up with my sound deadener and was wondering if it would be overkill or if it would cause moisture problems to put sound deadener on the inner door skin (meaning behind the glass) in my Challenger. I was thinking of putting it behind the glass in the front and back of the car.

Not only is it overkill, but it will add unnecessary weight.  Have you done the roof, package tray, trunk divider? All these places will make a bigger difference.

a few small pieces take the drone out of the panel.

If the factory tar paper stuff is gone, then a square or two will help reduce sound transmission and make that nice  "thunk" when you close the doors. Doing the whole door wouldn't be necessary but may add to the interior noise reduction.

I've done the roof and the package tray. When you say trunk divider do you mean the cardboard divider or the supports. Will it really add that much weight? If i put a few small pieces in the doors how large of pieces are we talking? Like 1 foot by 1 foot squares? Will that do it? 3 in each door staggard?

When I get that far, Im gonna do both the door behind the glass, and outside under the door panel, dont care about the weight added, not racing it, I want it as quiet I can get it.

Yeah,
:iagree: I'm there. I would hate to wish i had after the fact. I'm going to do the whole thing as well. It can't weigh 1/2 as much as having a passenger in the car..I'm using mega mat by fat mat. It is going on really well. It is kind of cool outside so using the heat gun softens it up to roll and hardens up making it bond really well. I just hope that the results are what i expect them to be.

I put it everywhere, almost 4 bulk packs!.  Just the cabin not the trunk, I know it added weight but it sounds like a new Chrysler 300 when you tap it and the doors shut like they are lead.  :2cents:

Cool! It's tedious but i guess it is worth it in the end. Got any pics of when you did yours? I like the feedback that i am getting. Helps me make my decisions a lot easier.

I just got done placing Dynamat everywhere. One thing I found out is that a heat gun is your friend !!  I used it make it fit tightly into every indentation.

Something else I did was to cut a piece of flat rubber that's inner tube thickness and placed it over the 4-speed shifter opening with a hole that's only big enough for the shifter to stick through. I then covered almost all of that with the dynamat. That will make a huge difference on my car with sound and heat deadening.

Sounds great, my doors sound like you drop a bunch of junk metal on the floor when you close them!

Aren't you guys using this self adhesive sound deadener worried about taking it off at some point in time?
I was thinking of putting tin foil down on the floor first then putting the dyna mat over that.
This way here if I ever needed to take it out I wouldn't have a mess to deal with.

I removed about 20-40 pounds of this stuff from a prior owner, it's very hard to remove, lots of mess and hard labour and the foil is kinda sharp when you rip it. I don't know if it was prep issues or pre existing but there was also some surface rust under some of the deadener.
