440 Timing

440 wont start

1) Set piston 1 at TDC, set rotor right at spark 1 terminal on cap. ( Distributor's vacuum canister point to driver side)
Start the motor: it wont start, spraying gas out of carb, pop through carb

2) Turn the distributor clock-wise all the way (  Distributor's vacuum canister point to front)
Start the motor: it start.

Whats happened and whats wrong?

Is the #1 cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke?  If it is at the top of the exhaust stroke, it will do what you are experiencing...   0.02

Whats happened and whats wrong?

When I say "all the way" it mean turn clockwise (about 90 degree) until vacuum canister hit the coolant hose. It doesn't mean turn distributor 180 degree.
Is it still symptoms of piston1 TDC when at exhaust stroke?

was anything done to it or suddenly no start?  wires on the cap in the right direction?

Sounds to me like the damper is marked wrong or the outer ring has slipped , the engine wants more timing , bring it up to 3000 rpm advance the timing until advancing it doesn't increase RPM anymore then turn it CCW until the rpm just starts to drop & tighten the bolt & forget about it

72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

What happen if use low octane, 87, into high compression 440?

get pinging under acceleration.
Won't prevent starting.
I'd trace each plug wire again.

Went through all this myself not too long ago. Pull your #1spark plug out. Take the distributor cap off, but get an idea where the #1 is located at. Remember the big block turns opposite of the small blocks. Stick your thumb over the spark plug hole and have someone crank over the engine. Let it turn over completely a couple times to verify you are on the compression stroke.
You can also buy the tape to lay on your dampener wheel to mark all the degrees, but that is only good if the dampener wheel isn't boogered up as CP suggested.
Verify spark plug wires are correct.
It should fire if you have gas, spark and on the correct stroke with correct order of wires.
