Best option for rear sway bar.
« on: January 21, 2015 - 10:51:52 AM »
All,
My 73 Challenger is in need of a rear sway bar. I have a stock one on the front and the rear i am unable to use because the stock rear sway bar does not clear the TTI exhaust. I did not realize this Until after installing the exhaust and reading the foot notes on the TTI website. I  seen some older posts but they are pretty old and was wondering if there were any new sway bars out there that  will work well with my front stock one. Ive  been looking at Hellwig, Addco and  really not sure. From the older posts i see a lot of likes and dislikes. Any help would be appreciated.

Crap!, I cant help you, but it looks like I have the same problem, I have a 2,5" TTI X-pipe system and a Firmfeel factory style swaybar waiting to be installed. Gotta investigate this further.

I am installing my TTi 2.5" X-pipe & tail pipes and my rear sway bar is fine. I have had it for 10+ years and I do not recall the brand. I believe it is a 3/4" made by PST or Addco. It was one of the aftermarket guys.
This pictures shows some of the sway bar with the TTi tail pipes.

You will have to get a rear sway that goes under the differential.  I went with one from PST (7/8") but larger ones are available from Hotchkis, Hellwig, etc.  The one from Firm Feel goes above the rear diff so that will not work.  Made a big difference in roll, and no issues with my TTI 3" exhaust since it was below the rear diff. Here are pics of mine and the install.

I have the same rear bar as dfrazz and a66. They are not quite as good as factory style because they add to unsprung weight, but they leave more room for the exhaust.
The pst instructions call for mounting the end link bracket to the frame with a u-bolt. I manged to tear that u-bolt through the frame. I have since rewelded the frame and am in the process of designing a more durable/frame friendly mount system.

In the first pic you can see where you have to drill holes and feed the U-bolt through, and shim it.  It did not rip through, but it would be good to add some beef to your frame back there since it was not made for this.

Look at reply #4, according to edl94 he didn't have any issues with his '73 Cuda. Could it be different between Cuda's and Challengers?

No, on reply #4, that one is under the rear axle also, the stock, and Firmfeels bar is mounted over the axle. I can see why its tight, but on a stock swaybar car, how is the pipes runnning then? The pict is from TTI's website.

I have asked Firmfeel and the place I got the TTI system from, waiting for answers. But if youre gonna get a new one, I see Hotchkiss makes one that works and looks like its not too low under the rear axle. I already got the Firmfeel bar, and I shipped it here to Sweden also, hopefully there is a magic trick that makes it work out!

In this thread CC member Billitt has a OEM bar with the exhaust fitting good, dont see why the TTI system would be so much different..

I spoke with Sam at TTI today and he told my that the stock rear sway bar will work. On their site it states that it will not work. I hope that i can get my stock one to work. Ill be  :working: a little tonight. If or when I get it to work i will post pictures of the stock bar.

Good news! If the stock works, then maybe mine will work also, they look similar.

I have 3 inch tailpipes and a stock rear sway bar on my 70, they aren't TTI though. Shocked the heck out of me when I wiggled it all in there.

Firmfeel has not heard of any conflicts with TTI systems for their sway bar, and my TTI dealer here has mounted many TTI systems on OEM sway bar cars, so it looks good so far!

I think the problem it is tight without much room, not that it is impossible. Just might have to spend a little more time tweaking the position of the "over the axle" part of the exhaust system.
