LED Bulbs/Flasher Upgrade Issue - '71 Cuda

I upgraded my front and rear turn signals, side marker lamps, and reverse lights with LED bulbs. Of course, the original Ideal 636 flashers would not allow the turn signals to work. So, I installed two electronic EF32RL flashers and my turn signals still don't work (yes, the flasher pigtail is grounded). Emergency flashers work fine. Anyone have any idea what is wrong?

I got some electro mechanical flasher from Autozone off their shelf (around $12 each but forgot the number). I got the hazard and back turn signal working. However, the front turn signal still won't flash. Since the front and rear LED bulbs are different, so it must be the design of the LED bulbs? I still have my old light bulbs for the front.

Front and rear bulbs are the same except for color whether you go LED or not....1157s. Amber in the front and red in the back.

Someone here had a problem like this and had to switch the 2 wires on the flasher terminals to make them flash. You can use a paperclip to pop out the terminals to reverse them.

I had the same issue as you.  You have the correct 2 flashers like I have.  On the flasher behind the ashtray, you need to reverse the 2 wires going to flasher.    You can make your own little pigtail using 2 wires and male/female spade connectors.  I used an adapter like this and added male spades to the ends and reversed them into the wiring socket.  This should solve your problem.  Reason for this is: + and - are reversed on the one behind the ashtray.  The one near the fuse block is polarized correctly for the LED flasher.  To confirm for your application, use a test light.  Look at the terminals on the flasher, there is a dedicated + and -.

I'll try reversing the wires tomorrow and report back. I have heard of this polarity issue before, but didn't think it was my problem because the old flasher + terminal was the same terminal on the new flasher. Hopefully it will solve the issue.

On my old flashers, there were no polarity markings.  The old style ones work no matter which position the + or - is located.  I chose not to remove the terminals and turn them around, just in case I return it to stock and forget to turn it back.  But the paperclip method will work too.

I was considering swapping mine out, especially in the back, for more brightness from the tail lights/ stop lights......PILOT makes an 1157 I was considering.....but damn....$20 for one bulb......

That said, if it works, and is really brighter, great....but do you have to, then, change EVERY bulb on the car (tails, signals, sidemarkers) out for LED?

Ok, the brighter part is the most interesting to me...... so....

Would need  2 1157 red or white for stop/tail/turn,   2 1156 ambers for the front turns,   4 LED marker lamps (anyone know the #) , LED license plate lamps (since they are on the same circuit right?) and a new electronic style flasher unit......and reverse the wires as noted above...sound right?

Drew (SleepyChallenger) switched to LED's and bought the new headlight relay kit and noticed a significant difference.  We then put in LED brake light bulbs (Red Sylvania LEDs 1157R) in my Cuda and Charger.  They are brighter and light up faster for sure!  Someday I will switch out the rest of the bulbs too.

SO you swapped out the flasher too right?

I was looking at "superbrightleds.com".....$15 each bulb, but some folks posted that they thought they were not as bright as they should be.....

I think I started this post last year....sorry I didn't update here sooner. Here's an update.....I switched the polarity on my new electronic turn signal flasher and now the turn signals work great. The entire project involved a variation of the MAD electric modification, new alternator, ALT to BAT direct 6 AWG charge wire, and relays for the low beams, high beams, and fog lamps, and ammeter to voltmeter modification. I was going to change the head lamps to quality E code lamps, but I decided to delay that project for a while....the relays made a significant difference. ALL my lamps, except the head lights were changed to LEDs....tail lights, parking lights, side markers, dash lights....everything. The dash lighting upgrade was HUGE as far as illumination goes. If someone needs more specific info, I'll try to help.

LED lamps are brighter than our original factory lamps....at least they appear to be brighter and more visible. The wavelengths and means of measuring brightness are different for LEDs. The bottom line is yes, they are slightly brighter. It helps significantly to match the factory lens color to the LED color. It will make for a richer color and often will be brighter. I see a lot of our cars running around with a "pinkish" tint to the taillights because the owner put in white lamps instead of red.

As far as electrical draw is concerned, well, it's huge. An 1157 LED will draw 1/8th - 1/10th what an incandescent 1157 will draw.

It's important to purchase quality LEDs. All 1157 LED equivalents are not all the same. Quality and illumination will vary considerably. I purchased all my LEDs from Superbrightleds.com and there was a fair amount of trial and error to get things the way I wanted...especially with the dash. I have several LED lamps left over from trying different ones in an attempt to optimize illumination and still keep the factory look.

No, you do not have to change all the lamps to LEDs....you can just change your tail lights and leave everything else original if you want....but you won't.

Nope, just swapped out the rear bulbs and everything still works fine.
