Fuel Sending Unit Question

Long > Short ... Went to fill her up (first time), started leaking fuel out of sending unit.

Easily diagnosed (see pic): the sending unit has 2 outlets .. one obviously runs to pump and engine .. that one was fine.  There is a second that is capped - which was leaking.

As you can see in pic, the second outlet had what looks like vacuum line cap with clamp.  Problem was, the clamp was fully tightened but the cap would still rotate ... probably with cold weather (30 F) ... the fuel was dripping out.

I fixed in at the gas station with a regular fuel line capped with bolt and clamp that fit.  No problem.

Couple questions (if I may):

1) The current solution works - but with detail put into car .... I really don't want a hose hanging off with bolt in it (its not hitting or swinging or anything ... but ..).  Problem is ...  any caps I can find are much thinner than the normal fuel line .. and I cannot find a clamp that will cinch it properly (problem to begin with).  It won't kill me to keep it as is .. but ... if anyone has an idea that would be cool.

Also, with that bolt in it ... though the pressure of fuel on it is not high ... I would imagine over time it will rust/erode a bit that bolt .. and that will contaminate the fuel .... how much .. of any significance ... what do you think?

2) I found pics of original fuel sending units (factory) .. they did not have that second outlet.  And any pics of new/replacement ones look just like mine.  Is that second outlet for some closed systems for return?  Or some new requirement by law/safety?

The second port is the fuel return port for big block fuel sending units.

No problem. My fuel sending unit went out in my 318 Cuda and I know I'm going to upgrade to a 440 in the future, so I went ahead and bought the 2 port and just plugged the return hole.

Cool.   Always give me option in future too: "Honey - you know ... we already ......... " :lol2:
