to tint or not to tint
« on: February 04, 2015 - 02:49:21 PM »
hey i got a quick question for you guys....I have been arguing  with my self whether to tint the windows on my car or not. i know the car is not complete yet but now that im just waiting for my engine to get done and have some time this would be a good time to tint the windows before i put the interior in. the car will have a hockey stick stripe and the fish gills if that sways anybodys decision. i just think that it would look nice to bring some more black onto the car. any opinions would be appreciated

If you're adding new glass then buy factory tinted...if you're thinking about putting that plastic film on...personally I think it looks really bad and out of place on a muscle car :2cents: :puke:

:iagree:  sort of an 80's thing around here? But we don't get Florida type heat except for a few weeks a year?

I put it on all of my cars, but we have 300+ days of sunshine and are a mile closer to the sun than most of you, so the sun will cook an interior and its occupants. 160* temps inside a car with factory tint are not uncommon.

A tint like production cars have IMHO, would look great, but check local laws. Some places don't allow above a certain degree/darkness of tint.

True. Some states don't want to see anything greater than the factory tint levels of 80-85%. Other will allow up to 5% light transmission. Most are somewhere in between and they may have different requirements for the front vs the rear windows. You also have to understand if your state has limits and you car has factory tinted glass and you add aftermarket tint, where is your final level at.

:iagree:  I tinted my 2011 truck, but it seems out of place on a muscle car unless you are going heavily modified/resto-mod and making it look more modern.

It is illegal to tint your windows here in Michigan and they will pull you over and give you a fix-it ticket . . . which means fix it within 10 days and show the police the finished product.

I plan to go tinted. As dark as legally possible in my state.

I had a cadillac that was originally purchased in Arizona.  It had dark tint on the windows.  20%!  Pretty dark.  I loved it!  Drove around in Wisconsin for a few years.  I did get pulled over once for speeding, no front plate and dark tint.  The cop wrote warnings, and said have a nice day.  Never fixed it.  I plan on tinting my Cuda once I rebuild my window bumpers.  Probably not 20%, but more like 50%.  Darker than legal, but not blacked out like a drug running car.

If you like the look, do it.  Keeps the car cooler in summer, and looks good too.  Why do you care what anyone else thinks?  You are driving YOUR cool car.  It can always be removed if you have to.

25% is the darkest you can tint the front windows in Washington State. I had 20% on my 98 Ram and loved it. My current truck came with 25% on the front door glass and 20% on the rear doors and I wish it were 20% all the way around... low priority on my to do list.
My Cuda still has the factory glass but if I did tint it I would go 20% all the way around.

I say "tint it."  I am going to tint mine when i get a chance.  I like the look on some cars. Doesn't have to be really dark, whatever your preference is.
