Eaton True Trac Question

Hello.  I've purchased an Eaton True Trac diff and assembled it to my 489.  There is a cylinder chunk of steel (maybe 3/4" dia x 1.5" long) that came along with it.  I've read that this chunk of steel is put in where the axle shafts go.  I've also read in a mopar magazine that they put a lot of grease in this where the axle shafts go when they install the chunk of steel before the axles are installed.

My question is has anyone else done this or just installed the chunk of steel without the grease?  If you did use grease, what type of grease did you use?

Years back when I had my first challenger, before they had repros of these spool's I had some made from 300M tool steel. I put them in first, swab a little grease on each end, no need to pack them full of grease. Then toss the pumpkin in the housing, stab in the axles set the endplay, and add fluids you'll be gtg.

I just dropped into the centre, threw the axles in, set heading preload and good to go, I figured grease would get washed out with the oil.

The grease isn't expected to lubricate anything, it's there to keep the thrust block from sliding out of position... Think of it as glue.... If your running Green bearings (I don't) you don't need the thrust block, with tapered bearings the block transfers thrust to both axle bearings....  If your able to install the pumpkin & axles without the block getting dislodged it doesn't matter whether you greased it or not...

That's what was nice about the spools I had made lol, they hold themselves in, although the factory originals weren't  strait. They were 2 piece set up, spools with a t-shaped cross section, pulled my pumpkin from a 69 dodge pickup that my father bought new.
