SEM Landau Black or Satin Black for dash?
« on: February 13, 2015 - 07:45:00 AM »
 Hey guys,

About to order the stuff for restoring my ´72 Challenger´s dash and came to the paint section... The company i´m buying this from claims that the Landau Black is a bit too shiny for the dash and they recommend Satin Black instead because that´s closer to original, but i´m not sure.

I will eventually repaint pretty much all interior and everything should be as close to original as possible.

So, what do you guys say? Should I go for Landau Black or Satin Black (for all my interior)?

Thanks!

Look at the dash frame very closely.  Is there any texture to it?  Cars back in the 60's and early 70's used a "suede" paint on the dash frame.  It has a slight texture to it.  My 73's dash frame didn't show any real texture.  The "suede" paint is still available but it's expensive.  If your dash frame doesn't show much, if any texture, then I'd use SEM Trim Black.  That's what I used on mine.  It matched the original color perfectly.  I also used the Trim Black for all the metal trim around the windshield, side glass, back glass and steering column.

For the plastic pieces, Landau Black is the closest color you will find.  Make sure to use SEM's Adhesion promoter and spray the Landau in multiple light coats.  The Landau is designed for interior plastics and vinyl.(even carpet)  The Trim Black is more of an exterior finish.

Hey,

Not really any texture to the paint itself as far as i can see.

SEM products are quite hard to get here in Sweden and buying stuff on eBay, Amazon etc is impossible as the shipping rates, taxes etc for "chemicals" are crazy. The shop i´m getting it from doesnt have the adhesion promoter so I thought i´d go with the 39133 Flexible Primer Surfacer instead. Bad idea? The shop claims that should be enough but i´m not sure on who to trust :)

They don´t seem to have the Trim Black in stock either so I guess i´ll have to go with landau black or satin black anyway  :banghead:

One question... Here in the US SEM is considered good quality paint but there are other good brands & one that I've sprayed allot of is a European brand called Wurth...  Very high quality, sprays well, lays down good & gives a long lasting finish.... I'm sure you can source it locally but here's a US retailers site so you can at least get part numbers...

Wurth paint is quite easy to find here, good idea! Much cheaper as well, as a can of SEM paint is about $45 over here.
Same problem though...which  color to use :)

SEM Landau Black or Satin Black for dash?

Had a look last night at Wurth paints and came to the conclusion that since I need to order other stuff (for repairing the dash) from that shop anyway, I might as well go with SEM paint.

So, is both Landau Black and Satin black a big no-no for the dash?

Perhaps I was a bit unclear, but it's the dash pad I'm looking for paint to right now :)

You will want to use the Landau black for the pad too.  Originally, the dash pad was more glossy then the plastic trim.  The vinyl on the replacement pads isn't an exact match to the vinyl of an original pad.  It doesn't have the gloss that the original vinyl had.

The Landau black will look fine on the dash pad but technically, it won't be glossy enough.  The Satin black will be way to dull.  There is a Gloss black but that will be too glossy for the dash pad.  I would use the Landau for the dash pad.  I painted my 68 Dart's lower pads with it and it looks good...not too shiny and not too dull. :2cents:

Thanks! I'm not aiming for show quality, it's a daily driver for almost 6 months of the year so "close to original" works fine for me!
Plus, I've got 2 cans of Landau Black already

for the dash Use SEM Classic coat . gloss black . its the closest you can get . The rest of the interior it is best to use Dupli Colour flat black .

Closest to what?  There was no gloss paint used on the interior of these cars.... The correct finish for the dash was called suede... But since the man lives in a place where he 'd have a hard time sourcing correct paint easy substitutes that are close are being offered.. Gloss isn't close at all... If it matches you car you might want to look elsewhere for references...

I've attached a picture of Suede, not an E body but the same paint was used....

I've decided to go with the Landau Black for the dash pad, and probably for the rest of the interior as well.
As you say, it's a bit hard to get the correct (whatever it is) paint here so I'll go with the landau black for all interior as I'm sure it'll look better than it does now, and it'll be closer to original as well.
If anyone points out it's not original, so be it :)

You won't be disappointed with the landau black. Don't over think it. Like I said before...just spray it in multiple light coats and you won't even be able to tell it's painted.

If anyone points out it's not original

Anyone who points out it's not original ask them to show you what they are driving... Most with big mouths only have a big mouth...  Most who actually have a car appreciate what it takes to get these cars out and about...
