Just put some on my car last week.  I used 17x8 front and back with a 4" back space in the front and 4.75 in the back.   I used Falken 451 rubber with 235/40's in the front and 275/40's in back.  The back tire clears the wheel well lip by about 1/4" and I have about 3/4" to the spring. I also bought the Carlisle 3 spoke center piece (spinners??) which were quite expensive but I think the add a different look to the wheel.

So with the 17x8 on the front and 17x8 on the rear, doesn't the deeper bs on the rear make the wheel look narrower on the rear?

Trick question eh?  :eeksmall:

The tire is the same width regardless of the wheel.  275's on 8 are the same width as 275's on 9.5s, no?

With the 8's and the backspacing I have it still looks like the  rears are  wider than fronts.  I have 235's in the front and 275's in the back.  That gives a 40mm wider tire in the back. So 40mm/25.4mm/inch=1.57 inches minus the extra 3/4" back space on the rears means the backs are still about 0.8 inches wider than the fronts and clearances are good.

This was my first time monkeying around with the wheel/tire dimensions so I hope I didn't miss anything.

Cheers!! ;D

A couple more for you.

I have some new HD rear springs and HD T-bars that I will be installing.  I want to lower the front ride height about 1 - 1 1/2". I think a lower stance looks good with the 17" wheels. We'll see whatthe HD rear springs do for it.

Cheers!! :)

I went with 245/45/17 on 17x8 with 4.75" backspace for the front... Fits nice... For the rear I went with 285/40/17 on 17x9.5 with 6" backspace. Will be doing either 3/4" or 1" spring relocation kit to make it work. I had to custom order the rear wheels with that backspace. I will post pics in a a month or so when I get the back wheels in, it takes 6-8 weeks for custom orders. I can post a pic with the fronts mounted on one side this weekend to give you an idea...

I got a great deal on my wheels from Tomz Wheels.. 1-866-939-1030, ask for Katrina and tell her Alan Crouch sent you... :)

So with the backspacing is that the reason for needing relocation?  I'm still looking at 5"bs on a 9.5" wide rim.  I'd be happyif my car would just get home from the p&b shop.

Hey guys, I am new to this site, great stuff going on here. This subject (one of many) touches on something that I have been trying to figure out.

Will the back spacing be affected by a brake upgrade, like a Willwood disc brake conversion? Also, could I put an 18x9.5 in the rear. without any clearance problems. I have read that 17x8 - 245/45 up front, and 17x9.5 285/40 out back is as big as you can go while avoiding any mods - is this accurate?

Kyle.

6" backspacing is to make sure my 285/40/17 fits insidd the rear wheelwell.. Because I put so much backspace on I will have to move the springs in a little bit to give the backside of the tire some clearance. Looks like I should have about half an inch with a 3/4" relocation kit. I am also going to invert the hanger to lower the rear 1.5". This should get rid of the gap between the lip and the tire nicely.

You can put 18x9.5", the question is what tire size and how much backspace will it take to make it work.

The recommended wheel sizes for e-bodies is 15 x 7 front with a 4 1/4 backspace and 15 x 8 rear with a 4 1/2 backspace, For each additional inch of width you want an additional 1/2 inch of backspace to center the wheel. If the rear end is centered, which they seldom are, you can fudge a little. Remember, too much backspace can be overcome with thin spacers, but you basically are stuck if you have too little backspace. The dimensions are the same no matter how large the diameter of the wheel. Unfortunately, the non speacial order wheels are usually only available in even 1/2" increments. A good tire store may have the device needed to measure your backspace. They choose the tire size first and mount it in the device and move it in and out to where it's centered and then read the backspace needed on the index. If you special order wheels from any manufacturer...they're yours, no matter what.  Good luck. P.S. The larger the wheel, the rougher the ride and e-bodies have enough cowl shake as it is. If you install urethane bushings, large wheels and sub frame connectors, you may want to invest in dental insurance since it will definitely rattle your teeth. That's why I stayed with 16" wheels on my wife's 73 Cuda and stock 15" rallyes on my 71.

By the way...you can get Boyd Coddington Smoothies which look a lot like TTII's and they're $250.00 each at Wheel Vintiques.  Check out their website.
