R12 VS. 134A

'73 340 Challenger

Doing a pretty indepth resto.  Motor, trans, carb, rear end all getting rebuilt.  Car is in fantastic shape, just been parked for 30 years.   

What would ya'll recommend for the AC???

Staying with the orig. look for the AC.  Have looked at Classic and talked to them about rebuilding everything for the AC.  However, what kinda experiences have ya'll had with converting to 134A?  The AC was working (not great, but working) before I started taking everything apart.  All the parts and pieces seem to be there, just needs fresh'd up.

Any advice?

     R12 only in the old Mopar rv2 compressor, little more expensive, but will perform much better on those hot summer days. The system was designed for R12 & won't run as hot as with R134.

Converting to R134 is pretty straight forward. To understand why these steps are important it's important to know that the molecules of R 134 are smaller than R12, hence a R134 expansion valve must be used as it squeezes the refrigerant thru a smaller oriface. A lighter synthetic oil such as PAG or Ester needs to be used as the 134 will not circulate the heaveier R12 oil. Lastly the receiver drier used needs to be compatible with R134, which most are today. Done correctly the conversion will cool as good, if not better than R12.
