slap stick id true or false?
« on: February 18, 2015 - 01:34:38 AM »
ok guys i know the 70 slap stick is a round shaft round ball and says slap stik on the gear indicator. i thought 71 thru 74 were all rectangle shaft with the t handle. then i was told that only 71-73 were the t handle and that 74 went back to to round but didn't say slap stik. i've seen a couple on evil bay that had the round ball and didn't say slapstik claiming to be 1970. my car came with 2 that i don't plan to use but since they haven't sold yet i've been thinking about ebay and just to make sure i list them right.

74 = round shaft no logo...

The 71-73 T handle looks cool but they were breaking within months of leaving the factory... Not many of the balls ever broke...

The ball shifters were still being used into 79 in the Magnum / Chargers

Wild R/T is correct, the one thing we're unsure of is whether or not the round ball shifters used in 1974 had the slap stik ability but not the words on the lens. :clueless:

My 74 has the T handle but no words on the gear indicator. The tranny is original to the car. It's an early 74 model. I suspect either Ma Mopar was using up the left over T handles or someone switched the handle.  :dunno:

I parted a few 74's back in the 80's & 90's they have the slap stick function...

Early 1970's had no wording on the lens.  Then it changed to "shift gate".  Then finally, it went to "slap stick".  When did they go back to the ball?  Was it right at the start of the model year or was it a running change?  Did some very late 73's get the ball handle OR did some 74's get the "T" handle?

The "T" handle at the beginning of 71 was different then the later versions.  The base of the handle(and the plastic shift plate) were a different shape.

The original "T" handle on my 73 broke.  My dad made a round knob out of wood to replace it.  He used that wooden handle for a couple years before a friend of his found another "T" handle in a junk yard.  I think that wooden knob is around here somewhere.

I would love to see the visual difference between the early 71 T handle and the later 71-73 T handle.

Also, I have never seen a round ball that has shift gate on the lens.

The early "T" handle doesn't have the hump at the bottom where it goes through the plastic shift plate.  I'll see if I can find a picture.

Well, all I can say is I had a '74 Barracuda and it was a T handle. In fact I still have the T handle.
