What do you use to clean up nuts, bolts etc.?
« on: February 20, 2015 - 09:13:12 AM »
What do you guys use to clean up small parts like nuts, bolts, etc. that you are removing and later replacing? A small tumbler like found at eastwood or do you have a go to formula for soaking the parts in?

It depends on the nuts/bolts, but normally I just soak them in the parts washer a while them hit them with a firm brush to remove debris. I them spray some carb cleaner on them to removed the parts washer residue. I end up with clean dry parts...

If you can get hold of an ultrasound bath, it works nice. Combined with a detergent or citric acid.

Depending on the nuts/bolts - tumbler or/and brake cleaner as it leaves no residue like carb cleaner does.

I send my zinc parts in to be replated.  They use an acid to clean the fasteners before replating.  You can blast each fastener to get the rust off or use a chemical.  EvapoRust works well.  There are acids that can be used also.  Be careful with acids and grade 8 fasteners.  They can become brittle when subjected to an acid.  It's called hydrogen embrittlement.  Even electrolysis can cause hydrogen embrittlement.

Fasteners cleaned in acid, ready to go to the platers.

plain old apple cider vinegar works great as a rust removal tool as well. just make sure to neutralize it after the bath (same with any acidic cleaner)
