70 base car with 383 four speed with some tail problem
« on: February 22, 2015 - 04:58:41 PM »
Recently bought this car. It's been in garage since end of 80's. It was rusted, repaired, crashed, repaired and rusted again. Some of the repairs were quite bad.... but no hard feelings. More work, more fun!
Made some small videos while working on the car and uploaded to a youtubechannel.

Here are some photos of a rusted and crashed wheelhouse and the repairs i had to do.

A new wheelhouse edge is formed to fit the new panel.

Welding and grinding and then welding some more and then.....

The weld inside the wheelhouse is of course grinder too.

The white stuff is not bondo but seam sealer applied after zinc primer.

This is what the wheel house and inner structure looked like also on left side but I did not take any pictures at that point. This is before I started with the hammer and dolly, bigger hammer and so on. Crazy stuff or what?

That's just plain fugly! Guys who did/do that kind of work give the whole trade a bad name. Just curious, why not just use a replacement outer wheel house rather than spend 2-3 days patching the old one? You're doing a hell of a job, but it sure looks time intensive. Just my  :2cents:

Completely agree on that! The only excuse for these crimes can be that the repairs were done in beginning of 80's.
The dark ages when the cars were not yet collectibles and their pure survival could depend on an 18 year old guy with very limited budget but still enthusiastic about getting the dream car back on the road. Perhaps I too are guilty of some bad bodywork back then  :-\ Different times...
And yes, very time intensive....

A rusted and previousely repaired trunk extension must be replaced. So I made a new one. Had to make some Tools also.

Test fitting the extension on the new 1/4 panel.

Final result after a weld trough zinc primer on edges to be welded and a regular zinc primer on the rest, but i run out of primer and need to apply some more... by the way, I didn't forget the ventilation hole but they don't seem to work that well. perhaps a water drain hole is better...

Thanks! Yes It's a family project and it's fun to drag them away from computers for an our or two. They are 13 years old and it was a tough job for them to remove the right 1/4 panel from the car in the last video. I'm making a new video of them stripping front fenders from paint  :)
