Best source of intake air?
« on: February 23, 2015 - 11:01:45 AM »
Where is the best source of cold air induction, from the front of the car by the grille or the cowl area?

I would say grill or just below the grill area would be best ... the cowl area can be a low pressure area and hard to draw from. I haven't seen any wind tunnel test so I can't say for sure

I've always heard the cowl has higher pressure.  A low hood scoop like an AAR has little benefit, as far as a know.

Both the front of the car and the base of the windshield are high pressure areas, so it depends on how you want to draw the air in to determine which is best. Neither has a distinct advantage. A cowl hood (ala GM) is necessary for the windshield area. An isolated air cleaner with ram air tubes would be required for the front of the car, which requires a certain amount of under-hood space and radiator core support room to be effective.

The low pressure area is over the center of the hood. To be an effective scoop in this area requires a fair amount of height, which is how the snorkel scoop came in to being. The factory style AAR, Shaker, or the '69 Air Grabber versions are somewhat effective in that they do pull cooler outside air compared to heated engine bay air, but they do not get a ram effect like the taller version like the TA, WO/RO, Popup Air Grabber, or Six Pak scoops.

 :iagree:
Best is either the cowl or using an air dam & grabbing air at the front valance opening .
the cowl is the highest pressure area at speed , but below 50 MPH it is not as effective , the frontal area is more effective overall .

Per the O/P's question both locations are high pressure & are suitable for an air inlet..

Now for the comments about AAR scoops being less effective...  A12 scoops, T/A scoops & P51 Mustang scoops are all whats called a Boundary Layer Scoop meaning they need to be in direct airflow to be effective......   And by being in the air flow naturally they create drag...

An AAR scoop is a NACA Duct design & do to it's shape it creates a pressure point at the inlet of the scoop yet by staying out of the boundary layer air it doesn't create any appreciable drag....  They have been used extensively in aviation both propeller drive as well as jets... They have also been used allot in race & performance vehicles....

I've tried repeated to load a photo of a Lamborghini Countach but for what ever reason it won't load....

The 2015 392 SRT and Hellcat both use the AAR designed hood.  Good enough for them, good enough for me!

BUT... The Hellcat gets it's fresh air from the front of the car, the headlight inlet.
