Refrigerator ?
« on: February 24, 2015 - 08:09:09 AM »
We have a 12 year old Whirlpool Gold refrigerator that decided to stop cooling this morning. Lights are on....no ones home.

Do I call a repair man ?

Or buy a new one ?

Most of the time it is just a switch underneath near the motor that burns up. A new fridge 2000 bucks,  switch 110 bucks installed .

calll a repairman.  it should be worth it even if you have to buy a new one.
My ten year old fridge quite a few months ago.  motor was bad because of dust that I never cleaned out from the back.
apparently, I am supposed to open up the back of the fridge every year and clean it out.

Cost me 2K.

I'm supposed to clean out mine too but it's nearly impossible.  The fins are on the bottom of the unit.(not in back)  You can take a plastic cover off the bottom and see the fins but I don't know how you are supposed to vacuum them out.  This spring when it warms up, I'm going to string the air hose into the house and blow out all the fins.  That's the only thing I can think of.

The motors on new fridges are very small(so they use less energy) and are sensitive to heat.  That's why you have to keep the fins clean.  Old motors were large and would run for many years but they used more electricity.

I'm guessing the whole dust issue too...But are 10 year old fridges worth fixing ?

Having dogs has got me real good at the "vaccum " under the fridge thing. Some you can get with a vac other parts you may have to use a coat hanger (gently) or something to dislodge all the dust/hair, but it real important. Unless your in the market for a new fridge....  :grinyes:

Depends on what's wrong.....sealed system issue, no way..   About anything else can be fixed for less than $300.
New 25' Side by Side is your best value.  We sell them for $800US(Frigidaire or Amana). on up.. Most folks go Stainless name brand(GE, Whirlpool, Maytag) & spend around $1300US
Whatever you do don't buy that Korean junk...LG or Samsung... we're done trying to solve their problems.

If you call a repair man chances are he'll have to put in a compressor so it won't be numbers matching any more.  Then, who knows what parts you can still get to keep it up to spec with the build sheet.  Now, if it's made at the kalamazoo plant and had the high output CFM compressor option in a high impact color than by all means have it fixed.  Some guy just paid 20k for one at Mecum last month so those things are sky rocketing.
