hemi install from below question

hey, im sure some one has done this, but I measured my motor and it's 29-1/2 inches wide, about a 1/2" wider than the narrowest part of the engine bay. not sure if there is some little trick to sneak it by so I don't have to remove a valve cover. I was thinking of some how adding something on the engine cart that I could tilt it to clear and then once it does even it back out. any help or ideas would be appreciated.  bruce

I thought the factory installed the engines with the valve covers off.

turn the engine a tad and that will help clear the covers on the shock towers. at the shop I put the hemi's in from the bottom with out removing the covers. But those were with stock covers. I would have to look at the cast covers to see if they are any taller that the steel covers.

Hey Dave, thanks for the info. yeah not sure but they do look a little taller, I need about a 3/4" to make it but an inch would be more comfortable for sure that's why I was thinking if I built a cart that would tilt it may work. I could also pick up the car on a bit of an angle the opposite way of the tilted motor to help. I know Alan installs them the way you do but that is probably stock covers as well.

Why not just take the valve covers off? Are they difficult to put back on in the engine bay?

hey dodj, yeah it's not that big of a deal to take them off may just have to remove one (pass side more room) just don't want to have any leaks as it looks like it is sealed up nice but your probably right.  bruce

Stock covers just clear, if they are not stock i think you would have much less chance of scratching something by removing the covers first.

Be safe than sorry. Remove P/S valve cover.

As it nears shock tower apron, Keep an eye on clearance.
Use a jack underside at the trans to slightly tilt P/S if necessary as it's about to clear.

Hey thanks for the input guys, your right It makes sense to remove the pass/side cover for clearance, I would feel pretty stupid if I scratched something.  thx bruce

I installed a Generation III 6.1 Hemi in my 1972 Cuda. I had the transmission installed and put all of that on the RMS suspension system, then used a gantry crane to lift the body and installed all as one unit without any problems. Did have to change the transmission tunnel some for the transmission fit.
