1970 Challenger variable wipers. ?
« on: February 27, 2015 - 04:06:22 PM »
Toxic just got word our wiper motor is headed back from the rebuilder. As I was looking at dissassembly pics of the car planning reassembly I noticed (based on the attached pic) that we have a variable wiper switch. But the build sheet is not coded J25 for variable wipers  :clueless:  . OK so the switch may have been changed. But my concern is was it a special wiper motor for variaable ?  I've heard of single and 2 speed, but just now wading into these murky waters. Actually makes no differance as Toxic says IT WILL NEVER GET RAINED ON   :smilielol:  But I want all systems functioning properly. Thanks in advance

As far as I know they were two options in 1970 for e bodies the 2speed whiper motor and variable whiper motor. It changed in 72 to to 3 speed ( I might be wrong here) but the only thing that really changed was the switch the motor for the three speed stayed pretty much the same it changed in apparence and obviously the part number is diffrent but the motor it self was the same. I think. Also the linkage and crank arms were diffrent over the years from variable to three speed. So if you have the varible speed switch you should have the varible motor. The two speed was painted black from the factory and the motor is sticking out from the firewall and the variable speed motor was plated and had that red putty centre where the wires would run into and the motor would lay on its side. I hope that information helps you. Passion4mopars is always a good source for information on those things.

Thanks for the help Pimtao. I have found a 2 speed and a variable/3 speed for 70 and 71 in doing some reading on the web.  It seems that one stuck straight out and the other one tilted down, but I'm fuzzy on the details.

Glad I could help. In my car I had a 2 speed whiper motor but a variabl switch, but everything on my car was wrong years and pieced together. And I don't have fender tag or a build sheet so I don't know what my car came with from the factory that's why I decided to go with the varible speed instead of the two speed like the look on the firewall more of the variable speed motor. But if you have the tag and you know what whiper option the car came with was, I totally agree and go the stock route.

I believe the motor we have lays on its side, with the red putty. Getting it back next week, then check further. Thanks Pimtao
